Our rooms are furnished to the highest standard with elegant solid wood furniture. The luxurious ensuite bathrooms boast glass enclosed showers and the basins have granite vanity tops. All bedrooms feature air-conditioning, overhead fans, fridges, 32” flat-panel televisions with HD DStv and complimentary Wi-Fi. Those with balconies have views over the adjacent Boplaas vineyards and the Nel’s river valley or over the town towards the Swartberg mountain range. Rich gold brocade drapes frame the wooden sash windows and double doors throughout the dining and lounge areas. A traditional bull-nose stoep roof surrounds the face of the building and the annex, and a short walk through our beautiful garden brings one to the shady pool terrace. The beautiful gardens are watered utilising grey and rainwater storage tanks, saving precious water which is important in the semi-arid Klein Karoo. An outreach recycling initiative with one of the residents in the nearby Bergsig community has been implemented. Where are we? We are in the centre of Calitzdorp which is famous as the "Port Wine Capital" of South Africa. It is an old village with architectural treasures and much to see and do. Between the coast and mountains, less than half an hour from Oudtshoorn, with George serving as a convenient airport. We believe in using fresh, raw ingredients and the very best quality meats, eggs, cheeses, etc. available in the area. The menus are changed regularly to reflect seasons and to celebrate the local food and wine festivals. A welcome glass of port is always available. Pool-side service is available during the day. Our rates are Bed & Breakfast and Dinner can be included by prior arrangement. The dining room seats 28 inside and 16 in the garden. ACTIVITIES We have a variety of activities that can be done independently or as part of a professional tour with our travel partners: Wine Tasting With two famous wine estates, De Krans and Boplaas, within easy walking distance and five more in close proximity this is a must do. Birding The best time for birders to visit is after substantial rains in spring and early summer. Hiking People just love the wide open spaces of the Klein Karoo, appreciating the fact that they are hiking a world heritage site, enjoying the experience of walking through an ecological hotspot where three plant biomes (fynbos, succulent Karoo and cape thicket) converge. Scenic Drives Groenfontein 50km circular gravel road passing the Nelsrivier Dam. Kruisrivier 50km circular gravel road passing the spectacular Redstone Hills and regional architecture. Matjiesvlei 5km on the tar road towards Ladismith and then 16km gravel road with secluded farms among aloeclad hills. Amalienstein 27km on the tar road towards Ladismith - historical mission stations and a Lutheran church 150 years old. MTB Trails There are several events organised throughout the year or take popular trails in the Red Hills and Groenfontein. Most routes are not too technically demanding and bikes are available for hire from Calitzdorp Tourism. Festivals Calitzdorp has festivals throughout the year most popular are the Winter Festival (Mid-June) and the Apricot Festival (November/ December). Donkey Trails The Donkey Trail is an authentic heritage experience that takes you on an extraordinary hike over the Swartberg Mountain. Horse Riding There are outrides and safaris to choose from.
