Press Release Ligna – 22-26 May 2017 Page 1 Dust-free drilling of wood and plastics ADU gears from Grotefeld – outstanding drilling results every time thanks to air feed-through GROTEFELD GmbH Eugen-Gerstenmaier-Str. 1 32339 Espelkamp Germany Fon: +49 5772/ 8071 Fax: +49 5772/ 8073 Email: [email protected] www.grotefeld.com The gears developed by Grotefeld (Germany) with air feedthrough coupled with drill bits featuring a central interior air chamber mean that dust left behind or even swarf from machining in the drilled holes are now a thing of the past. These developments bear testimony to the leading position of the Espelkamp-based expert in the field of power units and top-class supplier when it comes to the innovation of high-precision, sophisticated machining units. The engineering company presented a new air drilling unit with air feed-throughs and fixed spindles spaced from 30 mm apart at the last Ligna show, and has constantly enhanced this unit for a variety of applications, as the samples will demonstrate in impressive fashion at the company stand D27 in hall 12 at this year’s event. Trouble-free operations with excellent drilling results The background concerns the minimisation of “drill dust in the drill hole”, which represents a nuisance factor in terms of quality, time and Press contact: costs, by means of drill bits with a central interior air chamber (air drills) to permanently blow dust from the drilled holes during the drilling process. First of all, the wood dust remaining in the drill hole until now has been a disturbance in the drilling process itself: Frictional resistance, stress caused to the tool or power unit, machine downtime, wear and fraying are some of the critical parameters which Grotefeld confronts with its optimal solutions. When wooden parts were turned over, for instance, drill residue fell out at the “wrong” moment or pegs and GROTEFELD GmbH Eugen-Gerstenmaier-Str. 1 32339 Espelkamp Germany Fon: +49 5772/ 8071 Fax: +49 5772/ 8073 Email: [email protected] www.grotefeld.com plugs driven into the part protruded due to debris at the bottom of the hole. Compressed air right at the end of the drill bit The development activities of Grotefeld in the field of power units start with the accessing of compressed air at a central point, e.g. at the main spindle. The air is then distributed in the ADU gears to the individual spindles and finally the cleaning medium is blown through the central axis of the drill bit to the tip. In doing so, chips, wood debris or dust are blown out of the drill hole with compressed air at a pressure of up to 6 bar, resulting in clean drill holes right down to the bottom for all subsequent work processes. The spindles in the new ADU gears – the acronym stands for “air drill unit” – generally rotate to the right. The torque within the speed range of 1,000 to 6,000 r.p.m. is 30.5 to 5.1 Nm. Spindle output is 3.2 kW. The spindles are fitted with shaft receptacles with a diameter of 10H7 and lateral clamping screws for the air channel drill bits. When it comes to the further developments in the run-up to this year’s Ligna from 22nd to 26th May, Grotefeld will meet the exacting standards it has set itself in providing excellent quality as well as comprehensive service at an optimal price-performance ratio.
