Mean Green Win First Field Day
By Mary Helen W
Campers pooled out of their
Kampongs and raced to be first in
line at their events or cheering on
friends as soon as the Reveille bugle
blew last Saturday, July 27th. Almost
immediately the sound of rifles being
shot, arrows hitting the target and golf
balls soaring onto the green could be
heard from Kerrville - field day was
underway. After a hearty breakfast
of bacon, eggs and toast, campers
gathered into the Playhouse to watch
girls flip and tuck in gymnastics with
the Comanches eventually coming in
first.
The Aztecs took home the win at
Pool swim, coming in first for all heats
except two.
The noon totals showed
Comanches in first, Tejas second
and Aztecs in last place. But the best
events were yet to come: the Pier.
After a much-needed rest hour, girls
put on their swimsuits and flip-flops
and headed down towards the mighty
Guad for the pier events. Comanches
dominated the swimming heats and
many of the canoe races. Next came
the most exciting event of field day:
War Canoe.
Girls screamed and cheered as Big
Ben, Big Blue and Zuma lined up and
performed their chants and cheers
for all the camp to see. When they
finally raced out of the starting gates
everyone jumped out of the seats and
began to scream as loud as they could
cheering for their tribe’s canoe!
The event was closer than almost
ever before, requiring a photo finish
and all knew that the points from
War Canoe would determine the
overall winner. The Aztecs took the
win, with Tejas in a close second and
Comanches in third.
Aztecs screamed and cried as they
discovered they came in first for field
day and war canoe.
“Field day was really fun,” Aztec
High Intermediate Annabelle B said.
“Being able to compete for our tribes
in all of our activities really got the
spirit flowing! Seeing Zuma win at the
end of the day was so exciting and
impressive!!”
The places were determined by
only one point, leaving the plaque up
for grabs depending on the success
of the tribes as the term comes to a
close.

Using Your Talents for God
By Ryan R
On Sunday, July 28th, 307
Waldemar campers gathered
in Tejas chapel dressed in their
best whites for Sunday’s church
service. The service began with
“Surely The Presence of the
Lord” sung by the Waldemar
Chorus led by Virginia E.
Conducting the service was
Aztec Activities Chairman
Cameron J. George Anne
Elmore welcomed everyone
into Tejas Chapel and spoke
about focusing on God rather
than other worldly things.
The affirmation was read by 8 year Aztec Mary H. The message of the
affirmation was what you can do personally to make yourself have the best
Waldemar experience. Then Aztec Sponsor, Lauren B spoke about her experiences
and what she learned while in Africa.
“I loved hearing Lauren talk about playing for
God,” Tejas Hilltopper Kelly W said. “Her story really
related to how we can better ourselves at camp and
at home.” Lauren learned through her trip that “God
does not call the qualified, he qualifies the called.”
She used this message to stress the importance of
giving your gifts to God.
“I was really surprised and honored when Linda
asked me to speak at church,” Lauren B said. “It
was really cool to share with the campers what God
has been doing with my life this summer.”
To conclude the service, Marsha asked everyone
to hold hands and send love spiritually to our
neighbors.

Intermediate
Field Night
By Caroline M
The thundering of feet could be
heard from miles away as Intermediate
Field Night began. Tuesday night all
of Waldemar’s intermediates were
excited and ready to compete in
relays such as the tadpole relay,
standing broad jump, and the human
obstacle relay. After the points were
tallied, the Tejas came in first and
the Aztecs and Comanches tied for
second place.
“Field night was a fun competition
with all the tribes,” Aztec High
Intermediate Margaret Ann P said.
This year’s Intermediate Field
night was a blast and left everyone
wanting for more!

Comanches Present Unexpected Treasures
The Comanche Vesper was held
at the Pier on Sunday night, July 28.
GA took the story from the book,
Unexpected Treasures, by Victoria
Osteen. The girls did an extremely
good job at performing a fun and
happy vesper with the message that
through friends and faith in God, we
can turn our outlook of a bad situation
into an unexpected treasure! After
singing “Jacob’s Ladder”, Comanche
Leader, Margaret Ann Z, welcomed
everyone to the show.
The cast was small in numbers,
but large in presence! Grayson R
was a very pleasing and welcoming
‘Captain Jon’. Josie G played ‘1st
Mate Sue’ and was very inclusive and
positive when she found the pirates
had wrecked their ship. She had all
sorts of solutions for them so they
wouldn’t fret over a busted up ship
and lost treasure. Weezie C played
‘Fred’, who was beating himself up
over driving the boat into the rocks.
Abbey G played a very good “Captain
Curly Beard”, the perpetual grumbler
and pessimist.
As the rhythmic story transpired,
all four of them became great friends,
depending on each other for hope
and strength. Most importantly, Capt.
Curly Beard figured out that all the
gold, gems and loot were not what
make you happy. It’s the friends,
who lift you up through “Anchor
Thoughts”, or “God’s Word,” that we
can count on for strength. When we
depend on God, our lives become
more peaceful, loving and whole.
The Scripture readers and
‘Nuggets of Gold’ readers were
the following: Madison W, Caroline
H, Hannah H, Emma K, Alexandra
V, Michael-Leah
H, Catherine
C, Mary M, and
Lydia L.
The songs
the Comanche
Choir sang were
the following:
“ D o n ’ t
Wo r r y,
Be
Happy!”, “ Gone,
Gone, Gone”, “I
Won’t Give up”,
“One Love”, and “Keep your Head Up”.
Some of the soloist, duet and trio
parts included Hannah H, Grayson R,
Madison W, Emily G, Tyler R, Julia K,
and Michael-Leah H.
To close the night, Margaret Ann
gave thanks to these nice folks who
help with the vesper props: Veronica
C, Lori A, and the Men of Waldemar.
The set was quite imaginative, afloat
the raft on the river. The camp joined
the Comanche Tribe in singing TAPS
to end the evening.

the Comanches closely followed in

Counselors and campers alike
enjoyed all the games and can’t

Counselors and campers gathered nervously at the Happy Haven Gates
anticipating the arrival of the Stewart Boys for the annual dance.
When the boys arrived, campers rushed to the tennis courts to begin dancing
the night away. With cookies and lemonade in hand they mingled to music including
the “Cupid Shuffle” and “Party in the U.S.A.” There were dance contests and games
including Limbo to keep the campers busy.
“The dance was so much fun,” Aztec Intermediate Margeaux M said. “I loved
getting dressed up and dancing around like crazy!”
Keeping with tradition, juniors were released early from the dance leaving the

from youngest to oldest kampong. After the scores were tallied, Ranch House One’s
“Marsha’s Minions” came in second and there was a tie for first place between
Ranch House Three’s “Waldemar Wanna-Be’s” and Bella Vista’s “If Your Kampong
Items Came Alive.”
The juniors left DJ Lodge excitedly, already planning their skits for next year!
