National Croquet Day a Big success
The sun shone and the day went well. We had 16 visitors during the day, all very interested in the game.
None had played Croquet before except for Myra and Nigel Gardner. I am delighted to report that Myra
and Nigel have joined us, they have played at Burnham Club and are experienced players, mainly
Association Croquet, more of that later. Other couples said that they would return for another try so
look out for visitors.

Croquet Day.
(She had worked like a
trooper all morning)
Thanks to all the members who came and played that day. We are blessed with a hard core of player
volunteers who turn out for the club at event after event. I would invite any member to come along and
help. One, its good fun you meet really nice people. Two, it promotes the club and introduces potential
members to the game. Three, it helps funds and therefore keeps subs down.

Association Croquet
Association Croquet is the full international version of the sport, which is played by the majority of
tournament croquet players. The game is played by two players (or sides) each with two balls. The
objective is to score 12 hoop-points and a peg-point with each ball before the other side does the same.
Through careful play, a player can keep the tactical advantage, hence improving his chances of winning by
making life difficult for the opponent. More importantly, he can earn additional strokes, so allowing
breaks to be played and scoring many hoop points in a single turn.
The game of Association Croquet is in essence a tactical struggle with each player trying to manoeuvre
both his own and his opponent's balls to make points for his side whilst restricting his opponent's chances
of doing the same by careful positioning of the balls at the end of his turn.
It would appear that Golf Croquet Coquet compared with Association Croquet has simpler rules
and is more interactive (each turn is just a single stroke), but it requires a similar level of
accuracy and tactical awareness.
In addition to Myra and Nigel we also have Al Brown in our club; all 3 are accomplished Association
players. They are understandably keen to play their game. Al is offering to teach Association Croquet.
In addition there is a 3rd version of Croquet called Red House.
This game is a cross between Association and Golf and is played at Myra's club, Burnham. I visited
Burnham on Thursday 9th June and watch and take part in the game, fascinating. It involves playing
association type play with all players taking part, golf style. It also involves a small cage in the centre of
the lawn.
I hope you are all still with me!! So what next........
I suggest that if you would like to have a go and spend time with Myra and Nigel for Red house, or Al for
Association you contact Gill Stone to arrange a session for you.
