April 2016
Dear PE Teacher/ Club Coach,
NOMINATIONS TO DEVON COUNTY NETBALL ACADEMY SCREENING
As you may be aware England Netball has an Excel Pathway, the aim of the
Pathway is to develop athletes with the attributes to attain excellence. Further
information on the pathway can be found at
http://www.englandnetball.co.uk/england/England_Performance_Pathway
Essentially the academies are for players who are of a very high netball standard or
have the potential to get there with transferable skills from other sports. The
academy programmes focus on quality and not quantity, providing performanceenhancing training for these individuals, not squads. Competition is seen as valuable
but is delivered outside the Pathway programmes in clubs / schools leagues and
tournaments.
Academies will also provide an opportunity for players to be seen by the Regional
Talent Coach, and potentially the opportunity to move up the England Netball
performance pathway ladder.
As part of the Performance Pathway, Devon County will be running Netball
Academies for the U14 (Satellite Academy) and U16 (County Academy) age groups.
We are looking for players predominantly in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11.
Players who are selected for the Academies will be expected to commit to a 30 week
programme commencing in September 2016. Coaching will take place on Thursday
evenings in Exeter along with some Saturday sessions, venue dates and times to be
confirmed.
Should you wish to nominate player(s) to attend the screening it is recommended
that you have attended the England Netball ‘Talent Identification and Selection
Workshop’. This workshop provides teachers and club coaches with the knowledge
and understanding of the characteristics of a talented athlete in order to nominate
athletes to an appropriate level within the performance pathway. If you have not
been able to access this course then please refer to this link:
http://scouting.englandnetball.co.uk/ The link will take you to a free resource
specifically designed to help club coaches and teachers identify the range of
attributes and characteristics we are looking for in the England Performance
Pathway when nominating players to attend Satellite or County Academy trials. It is
imperative that you take the time to watch this before making any nominations.
