Windows Computers (XP, Vista and Windows 7) Connecting to the Academy Network from your Dormitory CONNECT to DATA PORT Connect your computer to the data port in the wall using the blue cable provided in your dorm room. CONFIGURE DHCP Windows XP: From the Start button, choose Run and type ncpa.cpl, click Ok Vista/Windows 7: From the Start button, type in the Search Box ncpa.cpl. Right click on Local Area Connection and scroll to Properties. If a User Account Control window displays, type in your administrator credentials or Continue to proceed. In the box labeled This connection uses the following items; click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or (TCP/IPv4), then click the Properties button Click the radio button for Obtain an IP address automatically and for Obtain the DNS server address automatically Click the Ok then click Close. Reboot if prompted. CONFIGURE DATE and TIME Right click the time in the system tray (bottom right corner of the screen) and configure the correct time and time zone. SET WINDOWS UPDATES Windows XP: From the Start button, right click My Computer, scroll to Properties. On the Automatic Updates tab, click the radio button Automatic (recommended). Click the Apply button and then click Ok. Vista/Windows 7: From the Start button, right click Computer and scroll to Properties. In the lower left corner of the window, click on Windows Update. Click on Change Settings and make sure that Install Updates Automatically (recommended) is chosen, check Give me Recommended Updates, and click Ok. ANTI-VIRUS INSTALL PREP Important: Uninstall any non academy-provided anti-virus program prior to continuing with registration. Windows XP: From the Start button, choose Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs. VISTA/Windows 7: From the Start button, choose Control Panel and Programs, Uninstall a Program. Page 1 of 4 Registering Your Windows Computer on the Academy Network 1. Log into the computer using an administrator account. Important: If you already have the academy provided Trend Anti-virus installed, right click the blue globe in the lower right corner of the screen, select Update Now and click the Update Now button in the window that opens. Also, uninstall any non academy-provided anti-virus program prior to continuing with registration. From the Start button, choose Control Panel and Add or Remove Programs or in Vista and Windows 7 (Programs/Uninstall a Program). These instructions are for Internet Explorer (6 or newer). We strongly recommend using Internet Explorer, although Firefox 3.5.7 is supported. 2. Launch Internet Explorer 3. Under Tools, Internet Options on the Security tab, click on Trusted Sites and click the Sites button. Uncheck – Require Server Verification and type *.andover.edu in the top box and click the Add button. Click the Close button. Click OK to exit Internet Options. 4. The Phillips Academy Network Access login screen should display in the browser. If it doesn’t, type in any web address and you will be redirected to the following screen. 5. Login using your PAnet username and password (for new students this was supplied to you on the salmon paper in your student mailbox). 6. If prompted with the Autocomplete Passwords screen to save your credentials, check Don’t offer… and click No (you should never save your password) 7. After you read the Network Access Control information screen click Launch Cisco NAC Windows Agent to accept. Page 2 of 4 8. Across the top of the page a yellow information bar may display, right click the bar and choose Install This Addon… to allow the Active X component to run. If you didn’t react to the information bar quickly, you will get a Java pop-up box and you should click Run and Run again to allow the application to run on your computer. 9. For Vista and Windows 7 clients, click Continue or Yes when prompted by User Account Control 10. Once the install is complete, a message will display Cisco NAC Agent was successfully installed. 11. In the taskbar, click on the Cisco NAC Agent login screen. Enter your PAnet credentials click Log In. 12. The Cisco NAC Agent window will display Full Network Access in green if your computer is compliant. Click OK and test the connection by going to an internet site. COMPUTERS THAT ARE NOT COMPLIANT 1. The Temporary Network Access window will display with remediation steps. To see what your system needs to comply, click Show Details. After reading, click Hide Details to return to the remediation window. 2. Click the Repair button to start the compliancy procedures. 3. Click the Go To Link button to remediate. Page 3 of 4 TREND INSTALL (if needed) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Read licensing agreement and click Install Trend. Click Run and then Run again at the IE Security Warning pop-up. In the InstallShield Wizard window click Next For Vista and Windows 7 clients, click Allow or Yes when prompted by User Account Control. Click Finish and Trend should be installed Windows XP users will be prompted to reboot, but wait until after Step 8. WAIT for the Trend blue globe to appear in the system tray (bottom right portion of the taskbar). Right click the blue globe and choose Update Now. When the OfficeScan window comes up, click the Update Now button, this will take several minutes – Do not click cancel. If an error occurs repeat the Update Now steps. 8. The Update Status should read – Component update is complete. Click the Close button. 9. Restart computer. 10. If this was your only remediation step, the Cisco NAC Agent window should display Full Network Access in green (this may take a few minutes for verification), you can click OK and test the connection by going to an internet site. If the Temporary Internet Access screen still displays then you must have more remediation steps to perform. SERVICE PACK UPGRADES (if needed) 1. If your computer is missing any required service packs, the Go to Link button, on the remediation page, will direct you to download instructions. Remember one service pack may be dependent on the other, so follow steps carefully. THESE STEPS WILL TAKE A LONG TIME TO PERFORM AND WILL REQUIRE A REBOOT. 2. If this is your last remediation step, the Cisco NAC Agent window should display Full Network Access in green, you can click OK and test the connection by going to an internet site. WINDOWS UPDATE SET (if needed) 1. If your computer does not have Windows Updates set, the Go to Link button on the remediation page will direct you to instructions for setting this option. 2. If this is your last remediation step, the Cisco NAC Agent window should display Full Network Access in green, you can click OK and test the connection by going to an internet site. Please note that you will be prompted to log into the client whenever your network connection is disrupted (cable unplugged, computer restart…) and then re-established. Page 4 of 4
