You`ve Got Skin in the Game: Take Good Care of it

You’ve Got Skin in the Game: Take Good
Care of it
As our largest organ, our skin serves as our first line of defense against the environment.
That’s why it is so important to treat it with tender loving care and watch it closely for
abnormalities. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that
skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. Surprisingly, more people get skin
cancer from tanning than get lung cancer from smoking.
As Arizonans, we average over 300 days of sunshine per year. The “Valley of the Sun” is a
big draw for tourists, retirees and sun worshippers in general, and you can’t beat it when
the rest of the country is freezing or blanketed with snow. However, too much sun is not
much fun.
The ABC’s of Skin Cancer
The American Cancer Society suggests you learn the ABC’s of skin cancer, in particular the
ABC’s of moles. See your doctor if you notice the following warning signs about moles.
Asymmetry: One-half of the mole does not match the other half
Border irregularity: The edges of the mole are irregular, ragged, blurred or notched
This Month’s Featured Program
Dr. Stephanie Blackburn, of Affiliated
Dermatology, will discuss skin care and
skin cancer prevention. Come learn how
to stay safe in the desert sun:

Color: The color over the mole is not the same all over. There may be shades of tan,
brown, or black
Diameter: The mole is larger than about ¼ inch – about the size of a pencil eraser.
However, doctors are now finding more melanomas that are even smaller.
Other possible signs of skin cancer include:
• A sore that does not heal
• Spread of pigment from the border of a spot into surrounding skin
• Redness or a new swelling beyond the border
• Itchiness, tenderness or pain
Self-exams shouldn’t replace annual skin exams performed by a physician, but they are an
effective way to detect possible skin cancers at an early stage. Keep an eye on your skin.
If you notice any suspicious markings or other changes, see your physician as soon as
possible. The good news is that most skin cancers can be treated successfully if detected
early. For more information, please visit www.skincancerprevention.org.
Secrets to Better Skin
“Hey, your epidermis is showing,” used to be a common kid joke
designed to trick the joke recipient into thinking that something
embarrassing might be showing. Epidermis, of course, is a fancy word
for the top layer of our skin.
In Arizona and other hot spots for sun, it’s better to cover your epidermis
in order to protect it from harmful sunrays.
Since your skin plays such an important role in protecting your body,
you should keep it as healthy as possible. While genetics influence how
your skin ages, environmental damage and lifestyle choices can speedup the aging process. Here are some easy tips to keep your skin looking
young and vibrant.
Use sunscreen and protective clothing
Since July is Skin Cancer Awareness month, it’s a great reminder to
always use sunscreen of at least 30 SPF during outdoor activities. Wear
long sleeves and slacks, as well as a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
that filter UV light. Increased sun exposure not only raises your risk of
skin cancer but causes wrinkles and sun spots.
Eat healthier
Consuming foods that are rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin C, E,
A and selenium will help your skin. Phytochemicals found in fruits,
vegetables, nuts, seeds and beans are also vital to healthy skin.
Stay hydrated and moisturized
To keep your skin looking youthful, use facial cleansing creams that
hydrate and cleanse gently rather than deodorant soaps, which can be
drying. Top it off with a good facial moisturizing cream. In Arizona’s arid
climate, there is no such thing as over-moisturizing. Don’t forget the
water! Water is the most essential nutrient and is vital in keeping the
skin healthy and hydrated.
Quit Smoking
In addition to the toll it takes on overall health, tobacco adds wrinkles,
sagging, discoloration, and ages your appearance. This is due to the
chemicals in cigarette smoke damaging the production of collagen. The
good news is that within days of quitting you’ll see positive changes in
your skin as it gets back to normal.
