Dear partner,
Teesside Sport Girls’ Centre of Excellence Trials*
We are holding an open trials process for talented female football players who wish
to be involved in the Centre of Excellence (COE) programme. Included are the dates
for player trials and also application and parental consent forms which need to be
completed to register.
Successful trialists at U11, U13, U15 and U17 will train and play full time with the
COE during the 2013/14 season. U9 players will train once per week with the Centre
but will also continue to train and play with their club sides. The COE will play in a
weekly regional fixture programme but will also play out of region fixtures against
the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Everton.
Please note that all players who wish to be considered for selection must attend the
trials including current COE players and there is no guaranteed place for any player.
Participants will be expected to attend all of their trial dates and the coaching staff
will make selections throughout the week at their discretion. If, for a genuine reason,
a player cannot attend trials, we will look at the possibility of assessing at a later
date.
Trials will take place at Middlesbrough FC In The Community, Normanby Road,
Middlesbrough, TS6 9AE on the following dates:
-
Saturday 1st June
- 10.00 - 11.45am – U9’s, U11’s, U13’s
- 12.00 - 2.00pm – U15’s, U17’s
-
Monday 3rd June - 6.00 - 7.30pm – U9’s, U11’s, U13’s
-
Thursday 6th June - 6.00 - 7.30pm – U15’s, U17’s
-
Saturday 8th June
- 10.00 - 11.45am – U9’s, U11’s, U13’s
- 12.00 - 2.00pm – U15’s, U17’s
Players’ who wish to attend trials must return the completed application form and
the consent form signed by a parent/guardian. Players without paperwork or with
incomplete forms will not be permitted to participate in trials.
Please note that these trials are intended for girls of an ‘Excellence’ standard. Please
do not nominate girls who you feel are not of this standard as the trial process could
have a negative impact on their development. If you are unsure of nominating a
player and require guidance, please feel free to call to discuss further.
There are only a set number of places available in each age groups squad and the
nature of an ‘Excellence programme’ means that players will be selected on ability.
Unfortunately this means that some players will be unsuccessful and it is important
that players and parents realise this prior to attending the trials. Unsuccessful
players will be given details of local Charter Standard clubs and will be supported to
continue their development within football.
There will be a £150 charge for the season for players successful at trials (£75 for
U9’s). This will cover all training costs, medical and sports science support as well as
away match transport. It also includes all training and playing kit for the 2013/14
season. This is a standard charge across COE’s around the country and is necessary
to offset the costs associated with running the Centre. There will be various payment
options available for successful trialists. Please note that there is no charge for
attending trials.
Finally, it should be noted that participation in the COE programme will require a
significant commitment from players as well as parents/guardians. There will be two
technical training nights per week as well as a third Sport Science/Strength and
Conditioning session. There will also be a weekly fixture with away travel around the
North East and Yorkshire region. Parents/guardians should take this in to
consideration when making the decision to apply for trials as players will be
expected to attend all training sessions and games.
Please return your completed forms no later than Wednesday 29th May either
electronically or by post. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or
would like to discuss further.
Yours faithfully

Centre of Excellence Age Banding 2013 – 2014
The Centre of Excellence programme’s age bandings are determined by ‘year of
birth’ in line with UEFA and FIFA International age bandings. This differs from
school/club football in England which operates on the school year calendar (AugustSeptember).
In some instances, this may mean that players are playing in an older age group than
they would if playing for a school/club.
The age ranges for Centre of Excellence football for the 2013/14 season are detailed

Parental information for young person’s participation in research form
It is the aim of the Teesside Sport football programme to provide young
players with means of improving performance and preventing injury in a
variety of sports through a number of scientific methods. In particular, physical
literacy is of critical importance to the long term athletic development of young
sports people.
We are able to use a variety of simple measures to gain valuable information
with regards to the physical literacy of the young players. Likewise, Teesside
University has invested in Smart Speed timing technology capable of
measuring speed, agility, aerobic fitness and power variables important to
football performance. It is hoped that with your consent, we are able to
monitor and improve the young player’s physical literacy as well as technical
performance.
The results of these tests are used for monitoring purposes but it is hoped that
the results may also be published in academic journals for research purposes.
It is stressed that if a research publication results from these measurements,
confidentiality is maintained i.e. although measurements may be published,
no names will appear.
Some of the tests will require maximal exertion, for example: an aerobic
shuttle test, however, most are concerned with quantifying the quality of
movement and are designed to provide important information in a way that is
enjoyable and rewarding for the young people involved. For these purposes
video of movements may be required for quantification purposes.
Based upon the results, strength and conditioning training intervention
exercises may be required to enhance performance and prevent injury.
These exercises will normally utilise body weight as resistance and have been
specifically designed to improve physical literacy, strength, stability, flexibility
and balance. All staff providing the exercise sessions have undertaken
training in these exercises and have undergone enhanced disclosure through
the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).
Yours sincerely:
