Tom Wolf, Governor palottery.com Coming this fall, the new Wild Ball add-on will make it even more fun to play and win with the Pennsylvania Lottery’s PICK family of draw games. Wild Ball will give players more chances to win. As currently planned, the Lottery will draw a Wild Ball number that will apply to PICK 2, PICK 3, PICK 4 and PICK 5. When the Wild Ball add-on is purchased, players could use that designated Wild Ball number to replace any of the drawn numbers to help create a winning combination for the ticket they played. Wild Ball payouts will differ from regular game play. Choosing the Wild Ball option will double the cost of any play type. For example, a $1 PICK 3 play would cost $2 with the Wild Ball add-on feature. A Quick Resource Guide and how-to-play demonstrations will be available at palottery.com closer to the launch date. Watch for revised Play Slips and Game Guides to arrive. SALESmAKER • VOLUmE 12 • jULy 2016 1 From the Executive Director I want to thank our entire retailer network for helping to achieve another record sales year for the Pennsylvania Lottery. The $4.1 billion in game sales reported in 2015-2016 helped to generate more than $1.1 billion to benefit older Pennsylvanians through a variety of programs and services. Winners claimed a record $2.6 billion in prizes. Lottery retailers earned a record $218.3 million in sales commissions, an increase of approximately $15 million from the prior year. I also want to congratulate every store that earned a bonus for selling a qualifying prize-winning ticket. Retailer bonuses totaled $985,000 for the year, up from $914,500 in the previous year. The upcoming fall selling season will bring some exciting new Lottery products, including the Wild Ball add-on for PICK games and a large assortment of fresh, fun instant games. There will also be new second-chance opportunities for players available at palottery.com. Of note, the Lottery has begun promoting 1-800-GAmBLER as its problem gambling helpline. Because the previous helpline number (1-800-848-1880) will continue to operate, there is no need to discard any existing signage or brochures. Player outreach information will be updated in the coming months. Again, thank you for your continued efforts and please let us know how we can assist in your success. Best in Selling, Drew Svitko Responsible Play Starts Behind the Counter The Pennsylvania Lottery urges players to play responsibly and to know their limits. The need to play responsibly also extends to retailers and their employees. We ask all licensees to be aware of this important matter and discuss it with sales staff. • It is recommended that retailers and clerks should not play lottery games in view of customers, while at the sales counter or while “on the clock.” • Those who have or may have a compulsive gambling problem should not play or sell games. • If compulsive gambling is a concern, stop playing and call the Pennsylvania Compulsive Gambling hotline at 1-800-GAMBLER for confidential help. Learn to recognize the signs of a compulsive gambling problem, which can include: • Denying there is a problem; • Lying about where your money is going or hiding your gambling; • Borrowing money to gamble or pay off debts; • Losing touch with friends or family; and/or • Looking for the "high" that comes from gambling. To learn more or to get help, please visit the Pennsylvania Council on Compulsive Gambling online at www.pacouncil.com or call 1-800-GAmBLER. Remember, Lottery players must be 18 or older. The advice we offer those players is very straightforward: play only at stores that treat players like customers! Players are customers. Put yourself in the customer’s shoes. Would you return to a store that seems not to care whether you ever come back? With more than 9,000 Lottery retailers across the state, customers know they have plenty of choices of where to shop. Here’s one way to make your store stand out from the crowd. A number of our most successful selling stores sometimes do not pay lottery a dime! How does that happen? They PAy prizes on winning tickets. By becoming known in the community as a store that pays prizes, they become a magnet for returning players. Another idea for increasing sales is to actively learn about our products, promotions, second chance drawings and engage potential players by asking for the sale. Never expect Lottery games to simply sell themselves. The bottom line is that selling lottery games is a terrific way to gain foot traffic that helps to sell other products, too. By providing outstanding customer service, your store can become a destination for lottery customers. SALESmAKER • VOLUmE 12 • jULy 2016 5 Tip for Success Promote Winner Awareness There are many winning tickets sold at your store – remind your customers of that! By displaying winners with winning amounts highlighted, you’ll let customers know they also have a chance to win. make your display highly visible and create a designated area where your customers can easily see them. Ensure the display is kept fresh by rotating in winners from newer games. Don’t forget to also advertise any big jackpot winners that you sell! The Pennsylvania Lottery provides resources such as Winner Awareness Posters and large display checks that you can use to promote the winners you’ve sold. Remember: stores can promote that a win took place, but should avoid using the winner’s name. Tech Talk: Reminding customers that your store sells winners gives them motivation to play and a reason to return! Reports that can help promote the winners you’ve sold As we’ve discussed, sharing information about the winning tickets sold at your store can encourage customers to play at your store. To review a list of winning tickets you’ve sold, there are two reports that can be accessed: Winner Statistics Report (WAVE terminal report) This report provides the number of winning tickets sold for the last 12 months, as well as the total amount of winners that have been cashed. you can access this report by pressing on the Reports tab on the WAVE Terminal, and then pressing the Daily button. Winners Report (Retailer Portal website) If you are interested in seeing winners of $1,000 or more sold at your location during a particular period of time, the Retailer Portal website is the place to go. Once logged into the site, click on the Reports tab and select On-Demand Reports. When the dropdown arrow appears, scroll down to Winners. Enter the time period you would like to search and click Run. All winning tickets worth $1,000 or more sold during the selected time period will appear. Information shown includes Game number, game name, and prize amount. SALESmAKER • VOLUmE 12 • jULy 2016 6 Drawing Schedule Players must be 18 or older. Please play responsibly.
