Guy Turner Reserve Tennis Club May 2013 News from the Editor: By Peter Coath Would you believe me that it’s already May. It’s hard to believe but it feels like the year has travelled like the blink of an eye. The Australian Open somehow seems like light years ago. But thankfully we are no longer suffering from never ending stifling heatwave when we’d rather spend our time at the beach than on a tennis court. Within no time it will be mid year and we will be eagerly rugging up in front of the TV watching Wimbledon on their beautifully manicured lawns while the champions battle it out. Sadly the Australian’s chances of holding aloft the gold cup or plate look somehow bleak. Bernard Tomic is still serving his apprenticeship to gain for more experience against the top 30 while the veteran Leighton Hewitt seems incapable of matching the power of today’s generation. Even for the women, Sam Stosur is reeling from a wayward year which shows that her nerves are rather shaky and her miserable Australian season has done nothing to boost her confidence leading up to Wimbledon. She has hardly managed to make it past the first hurdle at Wimbledon in the last few years which doesn’t help either. The best bets look to be Novak Djockvic who has plenty of hunger to succeed again after his dominating performance at the Australian Open. While Roger Federer will be gunning for history to become the first male to take a record 8th Wimbledon title which is phenomenal feat in modern day tennis. The fearsome Serena Williams looks the best shot to steal the limelight on the women’s side with her fearless power on grass which no other woman can match. Also she will be chasing history to salvage the Wimbledon Gold Platter for a 6th time, which only 6 women have done or won more in the last 135 years of Wimbledon Championships. Back at Club roots, I hope everyone is enjoying their tennis in the more pleasant Autumn weather. We have just completed the round of Club championships for the Junior and Seniors and wish to congratulate them for their great performance. See results and photos in the newsletter. Important Reminder about memberships Also a very important reminder for all members is that the Membership renewals will be due very shortly. It has been decided by the committee that if you don’t pay by the 30th June you can’t play or enter your team in the competition until you have paid. Any members who haven’t paid last season’s fees will not be eligible to play at all next financial year until they have paid last season’s and this season’s fees. If fees aren’t paid when they should be, then our club suffers financially and has many rather big bills to pay to keep it afloat. Also a big concern is the Insurance. If someone is injured and they haven’t paid up to date then they aren’t covered for losses. It’s your responsibility to make sure you pay so you are insured too. The club gives you plenty of notification to pay your membership so you are fully covered. Happy Tennis News from the President : Ian Polkinghorne Over the last few weeks, we have had 3 of our Junior teams play in Grand Finals, and have held our Junior and Senior Club Championships. Congratulations to all of the winners, well done to the Runner’s Up. Thank you to all that organised the Club Championships events, and thank you to all that participated. We have 5 new Junior’s join the club for the Winter Season. Our Club welcomes you and your Parents. We trust you enjoy your tennis at Guy Turner Res TC. A reminder, that membership fees are due and payable by 30th June 2013. Fees will be the same as last year. Please be reminded that if fees are not paid, you will not be entered into any competition which starts after this date. Parents of Junior’s, Please note, membership fees are separate from coaching fees. Annual General Meeting will be held in August. There have been changes made by the Victorian Government, relating to all Not for Profit organizations, like us. Therefore it is imperative that members that attend this meeting, as your vote in the changes to the Club’s Constitution affects you. 2013 Club Championships’ Juniors: Congratulations to the Winners and Runner ups. A well deserved feat and that everyone enjoyed the competitive spirit and sportsmanship. Boy’s Singles: Christian Lynch def. Karlo Vickov Girl’s Singles: Tiffany Noonan def. Jacquie Noonan Seniors: For the first time in a few years the Seniors championships were held on a Thursday evening under the lights, while the men took more interest than the women, but it was still a competitive tournament. Congratulations to Chris Wood on winning for the first time and Daniella Antonellos winning the Ladies. A well deserved win to both. Men’s Singles Chris Wood def. Dave Hadden 8/5 Ladies’ Singles. Dani Antonellos def. Lauren Harrison 6-0 6-1 Danielle Antonellos Chris Wood and Dave Hadden Night tennis news................ The current season of Night Tennis is running smoothly with only a few weeks to go before the finals. The weather has been kind with only the odd wash-out experienced. Congratulations to our teams for consistently fielding teams week in and week out rather than forfeiting and having to pay fines. Remember that if you are having trouble finding a fill-in to contact me as I may be able to suggest someone. As the Night Tennis ladders stand at the moment, we have 5 teams in the top four of their sections with a number of others ‘knocking on the door’. Good luck to all teams who play in finals. Remember that, as decided by the Night Tennis Association last year, host clubs where the final is played will provide the balls for the match. Also keep in mind that players need to have played at least three matches to qualify for finals. Home teams are to phone or mailform results to the Night Secretary on the night of the last home and away match, and winning teams are to do the same for finals. At present, there are a number of players who have not paid their current membership to our club. As a result, in future, players and/or teams will not be entered into a new season of Night Tennis if their membership is not paid up. Happy hitting! Adrian Batt Who remembers what happened at Wimbledon 20 years ago?? The dramatic 100th Ladies Wimbledon final, alas will be remembered more for Jana Novotna’s tragic collapse of nerves than for Steffi Graf’s fifth crown and third in succession. From a seemingly unassailable lead of 6/7, 6/1, 4/1, 40-30 in the third set, Novonta’s delicately strung nerves unravelled before our horrified eyes, choked and lost the last five games to hand Graf the match. During the presentation the inconsolable Jana weeps on the Duchess of Kent’s shoulder which brought the crowd to an emotional ending.
