Former College Basketball Champion Wins Lottery
$1,000,000 Powerball Ticket Claimed
Washington, D.C. – In 1984, Michael “The Enforcer” Graham was a celebrated college basketball player
who helped Georgetown University clinch the NCAA championship title. Nearly 20 years later, he’s back
in the winners’ circle—this time, winning $1,000,000 playing Powerball with the D.C. Lottery.
Standing at an imposing 6 feet and 9 inches, Graham shied away from talk of his days as a basketball
star. “Today’s about winning the lottery,” he told the assembly of press and well-wishers. Graham, now
in retail sales management, says he’s hasn’t slept since learning of his big win and is looking forward to
relaxing and getting back to normal.
“The lottery is everyone’s game. Anyone can win, and they do,” says Buddy Roogow, executive director
of the D.C. Lottery. “We congratulate winners every day from all walks of life—policymakers, municipal
workers, professionals, even basketball legends,” remarked Roogow of the newest million-dollar winner
with the D.C. Lottery.
This winning Powerball ticket was purchased for the March 16, 2013 game at the South Dakota Avenue
Shell, 2300 South Dakota Avenue, N.E. Graham matched five numbers from that drawing, but not the
Power Ball. The winning numbers were 3-7-21- 44-53; and the Power Ball was 16.
Graham is the D.C. Lottery’s first $1,000,000 winner in 2013. In 2012, the D.C. Lottery congratulated five
winners at the $1 million level or above: three Powerball winners, one instant scratcher ticket winner,
and one Hot Lotto winner. The largest jackpot winner in D.C. Lottery history was the $144 million
Powerball winner in 2009.
