The local game development industry which started developing in late 1990’s, is still populated by small scale companies. So far, Turkish game developers have produced a number of internationally successful projects. Market Size Turkish digital gaming market size is estimated around US$ 464 million in 2015, making Turkey 17th biggest digital gaming market worldwide with compound annual growth rate of 16%. In a country with 78 million inhabitants, 38 million people 49% of Turkish population- make use of internet whereas 22.4 million people classify as active gamers. 61% of the gamer population spends money on games and yearly per capita spending stands at US$ 33.71. The overwhelming majority of game fans in Turkey are males between 15 and 22 years of age. It is also worthwhile to note that 1.3 million Turkish households are reported to have a game consoles and the share of mobile games stand at 44%. International Game Developers in Turkey Sector contacts estimate that 95% of the content is produced abroad. Recently, a number of international game development companies, especially those of US and Korean origins, have started opening local subsidiaries for marketing, content localization and also development purposes. Among these firms are GamersFirst (www.gamersfirst.com), RiotGames (www.riotgames.com), PeakGames (www.peakgames.net), Dutch Triodor (http://www.triodor.eu/) and Joy Game (www.joygame.com). Most of these firms are active in online games. On the other hand, Aral Games (www.aralgame.com) is by far the most prominent local distributor boxed games. Generally speaking, the availability of Turkish language option and local content has become paramount for international game developers. Since then, a number of Turkish game developers have either directly launched or contributed to internationally successful projects such as Tale Worlds’ Mount & Blade (http://www.taleworlds.com/), Crytek’s (http://www.crytek.com) Crysis and FarCry series, Gram Games’ 1010 (http://gram.gs/). Some other successful Turkish developers include Sobee (owned by Turkish Telecom, http://www.sobee.com.tr/) and 2Gen (http://www.2genstudio.com/). Technology development zones, especially METU TECH (http://www.metutech.metu.edu.tr/cms/) and ITU Ari Teknokent (http://www.ariteknokent.com.tr/) have so far been successful incubation centers for the gaming branch. Bahcesehir University hosts BUG game lab, as well (buglab.bahcesehir.edu.tr). It is also worthwhile to note that Turkish universities offer high quality curricula in software engineering and digital design studies. At the moment, there are about 30 development firms in Turkey which are mostly based in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. In 2014, TOGED (www.toged.org) came to life as the sector organization for the gaming industry. OyunDer is another important association for Turkish gaming sector (www.oyunder.org). Turkish government has announced its willingness to support the clustering efforts of Turkish gaming sector although a branch specific investment incentive scheme still needs to be developed. Turkey will be the partner country at Gamescom Exhibition in Koeln in August 2016 (www.gamescom-cologne.com). Opportunities for Dutch Firms Turkish gaming market is rapidly growing in terms of revenue and it is heavily dependent on imports. At the same time, Turkish companies have lately begun to produce internationally successful games. Therefore, Turkey can be an interesting location for the Dutch gaming industry in terms of both sales and development purposes. Turkish government has very recently announced willingness to support the local industry through financial means. The presence of a large Turkish speaking young population in the Western Europe may also create valuable linkages for Dutch firms interested in Turkish gaming market. 1.
