Callan Wins Wakefield Callan Sayers dominated round two of the Australian Swift Racing Series at Wakefield Park Raceway in Goulburn, NSW over the weekend by being the top qualifier, winning all three race and shaving 0.2 seconds off the lap record. The short, tight Wakefield circuit is a favourite of Sayers’ and after his first practice session on Friday he knew he was on the pace as he’d bettered his 2013 time. “The car was set up with last year’s suspension and tyre settings as a starting point, and we focused on matching our times from 2013. Having Michael Peake to talk through race strategy and race lines was great as we progressed over the weekend.” In each race Sayers diced for the lead in the early laps and was able to fight to the front and pull away from the pack and finish an impressive five seconds ahead of his closest competitors across all three races. “Being able to drive away from the field was incredible, and to have Michael come on the radio with a few laps to go in the final and say ‘back off and maintain the gap’ made it even sweeter knowing we had the win without having to push hard to the end.” All elements came together for Sayers after his third place at the first round of the series at Mount Panorama, Bathurst a month ago. Minor adjustments were made to the car setup and the further refinements to his driving style have paid off. “It’s all the little things that are now coming together. Every round we focus on a few points here and there and once I’ve nailed them we focus on another area. At this stage in my career it’s still all about learning, but we are on the fast track to the top.” Sayers’ incredible haul of championship points over the weekend has boosted him into second position in the national championship, a mere 4 points behind the leader.
