The solution was found by implementing the 902i weight
controller manufactured by Rice Lake Weighing Systems
combined with a Datamax-O’Neil I-4208 bar code label
printer. This equipment makes processing faster, has
standardized data collection and reduces manual errors
associated with written information.
The 920i’s large screen provides all of the necessary data
for each step in the weighing process. It sends the
information to a Datamax-O’Neil I-Class printer where the
label is printed and it transmits the data via RS-232 to a
computer. The software is embedded in the 920i indicator,
which controls the format and the database. For each box
or bale of goods weighed, the weight, date, time, and
description are recorded. A bar code label is used for
tracking the product’s destination.

The Goodwill store in Hillsboro, Oregon has a 90,000
square foot facility that includes a large clearance
shopping area and a distribution center. Both areas of
the Goodwill facility rely heavily on weighing
equipment. The distribution center weighs over 25
million pounds of goods per year. The store sells
almost everything by the pound; items ranging from
procedures and given them the opportunity to further
automate their processes. Today, once a bail or box is
filled, it is brought to the floor scale and the operator follows
prompts on the 920i scale to capture the weight. As boxes

Goodwill needed a system that would eliminate
weighing and tracking materials manually. Employees
would weigh a bail or box of goods and hand record the
data on a bail tag for record keeping and tracking
purposes. According to John Friedrick, Executive
Transportation and Donations Manager for the area,
