Junior Regional Performance Centre Lead Coaches - Job description
This describes the role of the Junior Regional Performance Centre (JRPC) Lead Coaches in
2009. It should be recognised that we are currently undergoing JRPC site tendering for 2009.
We are aiming to have announced the successful applicants by April 2009. Until then we are
working to the previously mapped locations as a guide, these are: Winchester, Oxted and
North Oxford.
Definition and responsibilities: SCHA is working in partnership with England Hockey (EH)
to develop and manage three Junior Regional Performance Centres (JRPC). Each JRPC will be
led by one Centrally Contracted Coach (CCC) appointed by EH, supported by other CCCs
where possible. There will be four squads of boys and Girls, for those born in 1995, 1994, 1993
and 1992. Each squad will have a Lead coach, Assistant coach and a Manager. Therefore, eight
lead Regional Coaches will be appointed for each Centre. This role should be seen as part of
the Coach's own development as well as the players, with some successful coaches in time
becoming CCCs and/or be part of a national junior coaching team. This post will be subject to
an enhanced CRB check through EH.
Duties: The Regional Coaches will be expected to:
 ensure the principles of the Single System are applied;
 provide high quality performance coaching, in line with the EH Syllabus to the players in
their squad; and
 provide feedback on, and to, each player in their age group squad as required.
This will involve:
 liaising, as appropriate, with the CCC and the other staff at the JRPC where the
Regional Coach works, especially the manager of the relevant age group, to ensure the
delivery of the agreed coaching programme;
 abiding by the EH code of ethics, if available, and the SCHA code of conduct and
practice;
 ensuring that the selection and evaluation criteria defined by England Hockey are
applied;
 ensuring that a safe training and playing environment is maintained at all times, with
regard to young players’ welfare during and between coaching sessions;
 attending such meetings of the JRPC and coach development and training as are
necessary;
 acting as a mentor to other coaches supporting the squad, as appropriate.
Timings: This is most easily explained as follows:
 All JRPC staff will be expected to attend a training evening prior to the assessment days,
details to be confirmed.

For 2009/10 session only a pre-JRPC assessment day will be held for both boys and girls
in May at all three JRPC locations, dates and venues to be confirmed.
All JRPC’s will then follow set dates for both boys and girls. These dates are:

On each day 4 hours of coaching to be provided. It is expected that Regional Coaches
will attend all of these, except in exceptional circumstances.
 Tier 1 competition and HiPAC preparation (working with a squad from the JRPC at a
venue with squads from two other JRPCs) on 13th and 27th September. This will be for
all four age groups and venues are to be confirmed. It is expected that Regional Coaches
will attend these, except in exceptional circumstances.
Some Regional Coaches may wish to put themselves forward to work at the next (Tier 2) level.
All Tier 2 appointments will be made by EH
Payment: Lead Regional coaches will receive payment anticipated as being within the band of
£15-20 per hour, but to be finalised. When traveling to tier 1 competition Lead coaches will
receive a daily completion rate and will not be able to claim per hour. The daily competition
rate is to be finalized.

Applications close on the 31st March 2009. Interviews will be held on the weekend of 11th/12th
April and 18th/19th April.

Level 2 Coach or above
Current First Aid Certificate
Current Child Protection Certificate SCUK Safeguarding young people needs to be
taken within last 3 years.
A satisfactory enhanced CRB condition of employment to be undertaken with
England Hockey or umbrella organisation

Minimum of 3 years relevant coaching experience
Experience of coaching young players (U18s)
Experience in the development of individuals including; auditing of strengths and
weaknesses, producing personal development plans, monitoring performance,
producing feedback and reports.
Awareness of the current performance standards and techniques in performance
hockey.
A sound understanding of good practice in relation to child protection
Knowledge of emergency operating procedures
