Technology Skills for Ohio’s State Tests
State testing for students in
grades 3-8 is just around the
corner!
English Language Arts:
March 27-April 13
Math/Science/Social Studies:
April 24 - May 12
Activities on the Go!
Math: Practice rounding with
prices. Look for signs at stores
or gas stations and round the
prices to the nearest 10 cents,
dollar or 10 dollars, etc. (ex:
$3.79  $3.80 or $4.00). Talk
about how rounding is helpful
when using money.
Reading/Language Arts:
Play an alphabet game. For
younger children, start with the
letter ‘a’ and have them look
for the letters on signs. For
older students, have them find
objects that begin with the
sounds of the letters. This is a
great way to practice letter
recognition, phonemic
awareness and alphabetical
order skills!
January Important Dates



3 – School resumes

16-30 – STAR Assessments
13 – Staff PD – NO SCHOOL
16 – Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day – NO SCHOOL
Students will take the assessments
online, and there are many skills
they need to master in order to
successfully navigate their way
through the tests and show what
they know. The tests are not
designed to measure their
technological abilities, but rather
their knowledge of academic
content. It’s very important for
students to begin learning these
skills as early as possible!
These skills include:
typing with text editor, click/tap,
scroll, select text, highlight, use
video player, drag/drop, select
area, drag/slide, deselect, select
object, plot points, use ruler, use
calculator, and use protractor.
So how can you help your child
prepare? Here are two online
resources that provide practice and
tutorials with these skills, as well as
practice tests items:

Don’t wait until 3rd grade to get
started! Many online games help
younger students to develop some of
these basic skills. Please contact
your child’s teacher for more
information about the state tests
and how you can support your child
at home!
