Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (development coaching and fitness) Unit 22 – Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport Assignment Title: Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport Context The aim of this unit is to enable learners to apply rules and regulations and to officiate in a selected sport. Task Overview In this unit learners will examine the rules of a selected sport. The unit requires learners to understand the roles and responsibilities of all the officials who participate in a selected sport. Learners are also required to analyse the performance of officials in a selected sport, as well as officiate a selected sport themselves. She has asked you to create some promotional material about the roles and responsibilities of officials in sport and demonstrate how you would apply them. a) Produce a large and colourful poster that describes the rules, laws and regulations of a selected sport. P1 Rules, laws and regulations: as published by governing body e.g. court/pitch layout, playing surface, fouls and sanctions, number of players, substitution, time, facilities and equipment, safety, scoring, methods of victory b) On your poster describe the roles and responsibilities of officials in a selected sport include: P2 Arbiter, Judge, Communicator, Presentation, Timekeeper, Scorekeeper, Safety Officer, Application of the rules, Health and Safety, Scoring. c) Apply the rules, laws and regulations of a selected sport in three different situations. You will be assessed through teacher observation and evidence will be through a witness statement. P3 Situations: Player in illegal position, Player injured, Ball out of play, Illegal challenge. d) In an interview with your teacher, explain the application of the rules, laws and regulations of a selected sport in three different situations, say what would happen if these rules did not exist. P4 Include: Effective communication, professional appearance/manner, knowledge of rules, communication with co official, fitness for sport /level, health and safety, common sense, dealing with pressure, dealing with conflict/confrontation. b) c) d) 3 Use your observational checklist to analyse the performance of two officials in a selected sport, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
