NUH Trainer Recognition and Accreditation Guidance

Trainer Recognition
and Accreditation
A Guide to
Requirements
Introduction
In 2012, the GMC began the process of recognition and approval of Trainers involved in
medical education. The aim of this process is to ensure that all Trainers in a local education
provider (LEP) have met the criteria laid out by the educational organisers within their area.
The educational organiser for NUH is Health Education East Midlands (HEEM). The guidance
in this document is based upon the requirements of HEEM and the GMC. All clinicians with
an educational role will be required to be fully recognised by 31 July 2016. The roles that
require recognition are:
A.
B.
C.
D.
Named Educational Supervisor
Named Clinical Supervisor
Undergraduate Lead
Other Educational Lead

Existing Trainers – Requirements
A. Named Educational Supervisor
1. Every 5 year Revalidation cycle you must attend relevant training courses, master-classes
or education conferences and reflect on this within your appraisal. This should be a
minimum of 4 days (24 hours of CPD) of high quality training every 5 years. This might
include further e-learning rather than face to face learning. For this training to be approved
please email details of the training to the GMC Recognition of Trainers Board, so that the
training can be approved and you can be accredited as an Educational supervisor within
HEEM. Over time HEEM will develop a list of formally approved courses, and publish this list
online https://www.eastmidlandsdeanery.nhs.uk/page.php?id=1770
2. Your annual appraisal and PDP must reflect your role as an Educational Supervisor, and
you must demonstrate how you are continuing to develop and remain up to date as an
educational supervisor. Your PDP should consider evidence of GMC domains 1-7.
3. Equality and diversity training – THIS MUST BE COMPLETED EVERY 3 YEARS
https://www.eastmidlandsdeanery.nhs.uk/page.php?id=661)
NOTE:
If individual supervisors do not keep up to date, and do not attend relevant updates within

Supervisor

alternative face to face Clinical Supervisor training. If this is approved by the GMC
Recognition of Trainers board, this can be used as an alternative to repeating the
online HEEM clinical supervisor training.
2. Your role as named Clinical Supervisor should be discussed annually in your appraisal and
should be in your job plan. There is an expectation that your role as named Clinical
Supervisor is reflected in your PDP and CPD over the 5 year revalidation cycle. 1. Your PDP
should consider evidence of the GMC standard domains 1-4 and 7.
3. Equality and diversity training – THIS MUST BE COMPLETED EVERY 3 YEARS
https://www.eastmidlandsdeanery.nhs.uk/page.php?id=661
C. Undergraduate Leads
Undergraduate leads should remain up to date with the learning requirements of the
placement they are supervising. They should remain engaged with undergraduate teaching
and demonstrate ongoing engagement with the undergraduate team and coordinator.
There is inevitably overlap with the requirements of postgraduate medical education but
significant engagement in undergraduate teaching should form part of their portfolio.
D. Other Educational Roles
In addition to the requirements of other educational supervisors, Trainers with these roles
will also have role specific training requirements. These will be monitored through annual
appraisal at a local, regional or national level depending on the nature of their role. Specific
queries should be raised with the Director Medical Education.
Standards for Recognition
The standards for recognition are based on a competency framework.
The GMC have adopted the Academy of Medical Educators “Framework for Supervisors”
(2010), as the framework for the criteria which all trainers in recognised roles will be
expected to provide evidence of their ongoing professional development against.
The areas are set out in the figure below.
Clinical supervisors are expected to meet the requirements of sections 1,2,3,4 and 7
Educational supervisors are expected to meet all the requirements.
Monitoring of Trainer Recognition
By July 2016:
-
those with educational roles will be required to be fully recognised and trained in those
roles.
those with educational roles are required to have allocated time in their job plans to fulfil
these roles
failure to achieve these goals will mean that the Trust will be in breach of GMC regulations.
it is essential that all staff delivering Medical Education engaged in this process.
