PRESIDENT'S REPORT
May is here and the end of the school year is near. There are still outstanding issues in
every department as well as workload concerns. Please forward all concerns to your shop
steward. If the Union is unaware of an issue, we will not be able to help. Sometimes issues
arise at a general meeting or a unit meeting that you feel need to be addressed. If you are
uncomfortable bringing the incident up, please feel free to email either myself
[email protected] or our national rep [email protected] or your shop steward. CUPE BC
convention has come and gone with a number of resolutions passed and a couple of elections
held. Paul Faoro is the president, Trevor Davies is the secretary-treasurer, Alison Pringle
to general vice president and Laurie Whyte to trustee, 3 year term. CUPE 728 would like to
congratulate all of them and we are looking forward to working with them. Our local
executive attended our annual Trustee/CUPE Liaison meeting. There we discussed the
budget, workload concerns, staff shortages and contracting out.
In solidarity; Ryan Groundwater

CLERICAL REPORT
Without communication there is no relationship. Without respect there is no love. Without
trust there is no reason to continue. 10% of conflict is due to difference of opinion, 90% is
due to the delivery and tone of voice. I’m hoping many members of the clerical department
attend the professional development day at LA Matheson; please send me your feedback on
the day. We are looking for both positive and negative feedback. Our goal is to help get
what you want for your Professional Days.
I’d like to touch on a few changes that are coming fast and furious.
1. Paperless time sheets – A very small select group have begun the trial period for
paperless time sheets. Your locations will be notified when they will begin to switch you
over. Memos are being sent out to locations so you will know when it’s your turn. Paperless
is scheduled full implementation by Jun 6, 2016. Process for the switch will be very simple.
Just follow the memo. Enter your absences through the automated dispatch system or
employee self-service. Overtime or hours beyond (draw time) posting will be entered
through employee self-service with electronic approvals by p/vp. A paperless solution has
not yet been developed for those on Union Sick Bank or for those on a Gradual Return to
Work (RTW). For now, employees on a RTW will need to submit their hours on a special
RTW form until they’re back to working full-time. SPAREBOARD – Please note that
Clerical Spareboard paper timesheets are not being eliminated at this time.
2. Replacement of absent employees – please refer to B Memo #8 from 2015/2016, titled
“Non-replacement of Absent Employees”. Please remember that replacements are based on
the number of staff on site so it may vary at each location. Keep that in mind during critical
months of September and June in all schools and the last week of semester one in
secondary schools.
3. Year end – the time is coming quicker than we think and next thing you know we are
sky high in work and struggling to stay afloat. Remember the work you don’t complete
today will be there for you tomorrow. Deadlines have to be met but it does not mean for you
to go above and beyond raising your stress level to complete overwhelming tasks. If draw
time is available and your willing to stay and work, great. If not than remember you are
covered for the time you’re scheduled, anything else would be considered free work and
risking personal injuries during unpaid times.
4. Breaks – I would like to remind everyone that regardless of what position you are in,
using your scheduled break(s) is a necessity. Injuries such as carpal tunnel, back spasms,
fatigue, etc., can all be caused by not taking your scheduled breaks. You may need a change
of pace to allow your body, mind and soul to function properly. Food breaks will also fuel
your day and allow you to complete and enjoy the rest of your day after work. Life is like
riding a bicycle, to keep balance you must keep on moving.
