If elected Student Body President, together I believe there are actions we can take to continue
making UNC advantageous and prosperous for everyone! I would greatly appreciate if you could
forward this message to the members of your society, and vote Kevion Ellis on elections days:
April 4th-6th
My platform, Let’s BRIDGE the GAP is about inclusivity, togetherness, and unified action. As a
Student Senate Councilor for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences this academic year,
I have listened to many students voice their concerns and opinions about UNC. After thinking
about and studying these concerns, I have formed my goals to BRIDGE the GAP between the
student body, administrators, and Student Senate. Having a year under my belt on Student Senate
provides me with the background needed to address the issues of our past and look forward to a
great future.
Let’s Bridge the Gap with Administration!
This 2016-17 school year, I have heard many students voice their concerns and opinions about
wanting university administrators to become more present in student activities and events around
campus. Most recently during our Presidential election, some students felt discouraged, unsafe
and uncared for by our administration. My plan is to CHALLENGE our administrative body to
join us (students) in events and activities all around campus. We encourage the VISIBILITY of
our campus staff, even if their support is non-partisan, it is still comforting to have an
administration that stands beside its students. We want to see them as a part of us, even if
visibility means just hanging out in the University Center lobby for a few minutes a day, we are a
UNC family and we need to know they are there.
Let’s Bridge the Gap with Student Senate!
In my opinion, Student Senate has not fully met the bar of REACHING and ENGAGING with
students in years past. Let’s engage in deeper communication, so we as representatives of the
student body can hear more opinions, concerns, and ideas from YOU who we represent.
One of the bills I plan to draft would have our Senate Councilors become more visible in
different clubs and organizations around campus, especially those within our cultural centers.
How can we ask Administration to appear when we are not there supporting each other? We will
sit in on club meetings and take notes, hear concerns, ideas, etc. and bring them back to Senate to
discuss and act on collectively. Communication is KEY! Any chartered club or organization on
campus would be able to request representation from Student Senate as well. We need to be there
for everyone!
I also want to change the very low student attendance at our meetings and town halls this next
year. I know Student Senate meetings can be intimidating, and at times hard to understand
because of the way we do procedure. That's why I want to take steps towards making Senate
meetings and events a warm, comfortable, fully involved, and inclusive experience for everyone
who attends!
Let’s Challenge the System.
All our lives we have followed traditional systems, some that we've challenged and some that we
have never questioned because it's all we’ve ever known. We have to change this mentality. We
come to college to explore life and if we are sitting around being dictated to then who is really
living outside the box?
This next school year I want us, as students, to EXPLORE and CHALLENGE the systems that
we have in place here at UNC. There has to be more than YES and NO answers and options.
Let’s begin by focusing on WHY we do things the way we have done them for so long? Let's
LOOK into and EXPLORE new and more cohesive ways of doing things. Who knows, maybe
we can change or adjust our system so that it is even more inclusive for ALL! I’m ready to
address all sorts of questions, so Let’s DIVE IN!
Let OUR Voices Ring!
Inclusivity will continue to be one of our biggest concerns and focuses in Senate. We don’t want
to be excluded or marginalized by policy. I want everyone to be included in all of the decisions
that affect every student on our campus.
We have a voice and want to be heard! Let me take that back, WE WILL BE HEARD!
If elected Student Body President, you have my word I will CHALLENGE Senate and our
administration to continue to seek to understand and question how we can make UNC prosperous
and advantageous not only for students, but for every person who steps foot on our campus.
We are FAMILY at UNC. From time to time we get upset, we argue, we disagree, but at the end
of the day, we still work with each other and for each other to create the best experience possible
for every student! As your Student Body President, I will continue to join you in this by acting in
the best interest and respect to every UNC BEAR!
I hope my platform has given you insight to who I am, what my goals and ideas are for our
university in the coming academic year, and I HOPE you will consider me for 2017-2018
Student Body President on voting days April 4th, 5th, and 6th when you can vote at the
University Center or on URSA! #LetsBridgetheGap
