Team Guidelines and Expectations

1.
TEAM GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS
A. Operating Philosophy
The Liftlock Stars is an organization built on the ‘team concept’. This vision includes
management, coaches, scouts and players. The Stars are a volunteer organization whose
goal is to compete for the Conference Championship every year. In pursuit of this goal
management and coaches will promote our players to:
a)Major Junior Hockey Programs
b)College and University Hockey Programs
c)Professional Hockey or other career opportunities
Players are treated on an equal basis. You are expected to support and defend one another
on the ice, in the dressing room and in public. We think like a team and act like a team.
Players that do not adhere to this “team first” attitude are not welcome in this organization.
Hard work, team play, and proper preparation are not only expected, they are demanded.
The Stars will take pride in being the hardest working team on the ice each and every game.
Players will be made aware of their role on the team and the coaches’ expectations
regarding those roles. All players will make a positive contribution to the team based on the
needs of the team and their individual strengths.
B. The Public / Media / Representing the Stars
All players, coaches and management will represent the Stars in a positive manner when in
public or when speaking with the media. When speaking about our organization, do so in a
positive manner. Anyone who discredits our organization’s reputation or behaves in a
manner that is detrimental to the team will be dealt with severely.
C. School
Education is the cornerstone of the Stars’s Organization. Players are expected to attend all
classes without any late arrivals or absences. No days off will be given due to hockey or
travel considerations. School always comes first – ahead of hockey. You are expected to
put forth your best effort in the classroom, just the same as when you step on to the ice. All
school reports must be shown (filed) with our team education consultant. Schools are
contacted on a regular basis to check on our player’s attendance, effort and attitude.
FAILURE TO MAINTAIN THESE STANDARDS MAY RESULT IN REMOVAL FROM THE TEAM,
OR SUBTRACTION OF SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS. School honorariums are based on the type of
institution the player is attending and years of experience with our organization.
Peterborough Stars Jr. A Hockey Club – Player Manual 2008/09
School Honorariums are as follows:
Experience
College
University
Sophomore
$1000.00
$1500.00
Veteran (3 or more years)
$1500.00
$2000.00
These Honorariums are based on a full course load. Part time students will be paid a
percentage of a full course load. Honorariums will be paid to players at the end of the
regular season, after grades are reviewed. Failure to put forth an honest academic effort
will result in withdrawal of the player’s Honorarium.
D. Employment
Players who are not attending school on a regular basis are expected to find part time
employment. The Star’s Organization will assist the player in this area but ultimately it is the
responsibility of the player to find a job. We don’t want our players lying around, doing
nothing.
E. Dress Code
Star’s players and staff are expected to dress in a manner that represents our organization
well. You are expected to look professional for all home and away games. All players are
required to wear a collared shirt and tie, nice pants and dress shoes for all HOME games.
Baseball hats, jeans and running shoes are not permitted. Remember, presenting a
professional image is all a part of game preparation and showing your opponent that you
mean business. There are no exceptions to these rules.
F. Attire
All players new to the Star’s Organization will receive a team winter coat and a team track
suit.
G. Billeting Families
The Star’s organization pays billeting families $400 per month plus two complimentary
tickets for the annual Banquet/Awards Night. . Landparents and their children will receive a
pass for Stars’ home games. Billeting families are expected to provide a safe and nurturing
home for the players. Landparents and their children will receive a pass for Stars’ home
games.
The Star’s Organization is only committed to paying a player’s room and board during the
regular season and playoffs.
*** Players that are not recruited by the Star’s Organization but move to Peterborough to
attend school do not qualify for billet money until their second year with the team.
Peterborough Stars Jr. A Hockey Club – Player Manual 2008/09
H. Scouting
Individuals who scout for the Star’s Organization will receive the following:
a) A Team Coat
b) Business Cards
c) An Honorarium of $250 annually, paid on or before December 10th of that season.
I. Affiliations
The Stars are proud of their affiliations with both the Peterborough Petes and the
Peterborough Minor AAA Petes. Players and Staff are expected to communicate with and
cooperate with both organizations in a positive and professional manner.
2.
ROUTINES
A. Line up
In most cases, players will be informed of the next game’s line-up as early as possible so
they know their situation before they come to the rink on game day.
B. Home Games
Players are expected to be in the dressing room 1½ hours before game time (1 hour before
warm-up). Our pre-game meeting will usually take place at this time or shortly thereafter.
Music is allowed in the dressing room until 45 minutes before game time. All players must
be ready for warm-up 35 minutes before the scheduled start-time for the game. After warmup, the coaching staff will meet with the team again.
C. Away Games
Players are expected to pack their own bags and load them onto the bus. It is the
responsibility of each player to make arrangements with a teammate to help pack your bag
and load it onto the bus if you will not be taking the bus from its departure point at the
Evinrude Center. Do not assume your bag will be unpacked upon arrival at the Evinrude
Center. It is up to the player to make prior arrangements. Trainers will only unzip bags, but
will not hang equipment. All players are expected to bring running/work-out gear for each
pre-game stretch.
Players must travel to Away Games via the team bus except in the case of “special
circumstances”. Traveling with family, ‘girlfriends’ and other friends is not permitted at any
time.
Peterborough Stars Jr. A Hockey Club – Player Manual 2008/09
D. Practices
Players are expected to attend all practices and must be on time for each and every one.
There are no exceptions without the consent of the Head Coach. Being on time means that
players are ready to take the ice when the Zamboni doors close following the flood.
Players may go on the ice early for practice only if there is a supervising coach present on
the ice. Use this time wisely to work on individuals skills. Inappropriate use of the “skills: time
will result in withdrawal of the privilege.
We expect our players to work hard during practice. The Star’s philosophy is, you play like
you practice. Hard work, focus and discipline during practice are essential in developing a
winning team.
E. Injuries / Healthy Scratches
You can play hurt, but you can’t play injured. All injuries must be reported to our Training
Staff. It is their responsibility to make any initial diagnoses and to record/report and
determine the proper course of action.
Players out of the line-up due to injuries or scratches are expected to attend all home and
away games. . Injured players are expected to attend all practice times to ride the bike, lift
weights or consult with our medical team.
F. Game Preparations
Be sure all of your equipment is in ‘game shape’ prior to arriving at the rink for home games
or departing for away games. That means, ensuring that any and all repairs/needs are
taken care of well in advance so that the trainers are not forced to scramble unnecessarily.
It is your responsibility to make certain that all needs are met such that you will be available
to be in the line-up. This includes making sure skates are ready for game action and that all
sticks are ‘doctored’ and ready to go.
3.

The dressing room is a common area for all players. Trainers and coaches will work
together to assign stalls. The Head coach has the final say on dressing room assignments.
Due to the Freedom of Information Act the use of technology is not permitted in the Stars’
Dressing Room. Cell phones, (calls or texts), cameras or other devices of that nature are
not permitted.

Peterborough Stars Jr. A Hockey Club – Player Manual 2008/09
4.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
A. Punctuality
Be on time – all the time.
B. Mouth Guards
Mouth guards are mandatory in the OPJHL. Like them or not, you must wear one at all
times. Players without mouth guards will be penalized and could face a league fine.
League insurance is nullified automatically if a player is injured while playing without a
mouth guard or if it is determined that it is not properly fitted. This also applies to practice. It
is the player’s responsibility to provide an appropriate mouth guard.
C. Medical Insurance
It is strongly recommended that players attending school purchase additional medical
insurance through a school package. (see management)
D. Buses
The Stars are fortunate to have the same bus driver for the last several years (Bob Jaynes).
He is a part of our team and we expect him to be treated as such. Respect our bus each
time we use it and be sure that it is kept clean at all times. The bus will be cleaned by the
players after each trip. A cleaning schedule will be posted in the dressing room and it is the
responsibility of the teams’ captains to see that this schedule is followed We never leave
the bus in a mess.
E. Curfew
There will be curfew the night before all games. The coaching staff will set the curfew and
also be responsible for making sure it is adhered to. Calls may be made to all players or a
selected group of players. The coach must talk with the player directly. Curfew violations
will be dealt with harshly.
F. Public Appearances
Players are expected to make public appearances on behalf of the Star’s Organization
throughout the season and occasionally during the off-season. This is done to improve our
reputation, be visible and recognizable in the public, and to provide a valuable service within
the community.
G. Authority
Players are expected to show respect for all coaches, trainers, management, and volunteers
as well as fans who may or may not always be supportive of the team. If there are
questions with the team hierarchy or specific issues of responsibility, please ask
Management for clarification.
Peterborough Stars Jr. A Hockey Club – Player Manual 2008/09
H. Billeted Players
All players being billeted by the team must show respect for the families they have been
placed with and must adhere to the ‘rules of the house’. (Including Curfew) Any concerns
with placements must be brought to the attention of the General Manager immediately.
Billeted players must gain permission from team management for all travel arrangements.
Any expenses above room and board (ie. telephone bills) are the responsibility of the player.
***It is the responsibility of the player and his family to pay the room and board fee if
they decide to stay in Peterborough after the season ends.
I. Swearing
Be mindful of the language you use at all times. Remember that there are many young
children who look up to you as role models – so be aware and use your head.
J. Initiation/Hazing
Hazing has become a serious issue within sport and is treated with a ‘zero tolerance’ policy
within the OPJHL. This means that there will be no initiation rituals of any sort (head/body
shaving, hair dying, forced drinking, any and all sexual rituals) – outside of picking up pucks,
cleaning the dressing room and other socially acceptable practices. The fine for ‘crossing
the line’ in the OPJHL involves substantial fees, player/coach/team suspensions and
possible criminal charges. Do not risk making a mistake that could cost you or your team.
K. Alcohol/Bars
Players who are of legal drinking age must remember that they represent the Liftlock Stars
at all times. Use discretion when drinking and be sure to know your limit and behave
appropriately – especially when in public. Remember, in small towns, people talk and there
are very few secrets. Be smart, NEVER drink and drive. Always look out for your friends
and teammates. If you are ever in trouble, you can always call any of the coaches or
managers who will a) help you in any way possible, b) make sure you get home safely, c) kill
you.
Underage drinking, excessive partying and conduct unbecoming to the Star’s Organization
will be dealt with harshly.
L. Tobacco
Players are not allowed to smoke or chew tobacco in or around any arena. Chewing
tobacco on the bus also not permitted.
Peterborough Stars Jr. A Hockey Club – Player Manual 2008/09
M. Fines
The coaching staff/management reserve the right to ‘fine’ players for disciplinary reasons.
Fines may be assessed for: lateness, dress-code infractions, breaking dressing room rules,
mistreatment of team equipment, etc… Fines are usually between $5 - $10. The Head
Coach will determine how the money raised from these penalties is put to use.
N. Parents
Regular Season passes will be provided for parents at a cost of $200/family. The Star’s
Coaches and Management will only discuss with parents issues regarding schooling,
injuries, travel or billets. Ice-time, how a player is being utilized and line-up decisions will not
be discussed with parents. These issues are between Coaches/Management and the
players. There are no exceptions.
