Young People Services Team – North

UK Table Tennis Finals 07
On 23rd June 07, Halton Table Tennis centre, Widnes, played host to the Clubs for Young People UK
Table Tennis finals.
Over 90 young people aged 11-19yrs were present having traveled from a wide catchment including
Lancashire, Sussex, Warwickshire, and London to local entrants from Cheshire and Merseyside. The
event open to all four nation’s also welcomed young people from clubs in Scotland and Wales
The event firmly backed by the ETTA, with special mention to Karen Tonge tournament referee,
produced an excellent standard of play during the day with many competitors raising their game and
playing far beyond the expectations of their coaches. Many young people present had already
played off against others in regionally organised events linked to this national championship, so were
champions in their own right.
The excellent venue, enthusiastic competitors, support of club workers and volunteers plus a visit
from the Mayor of the borough certainly assisted raise the profile of the event and has certainly left
firm foundations to enable this event to grow in the coming year. The good spirit and fair play seen
throughout this competitive championship was a pleasure and credit for the attitude and behavior of
the young people should go to the club officials, volunteers and the young people themselves.
In addition to the championship 16 young people, under the guidance of Frank James community TT
coach, successfully gained their junior umpire award, the first ring on the ladder of officiating. Some
of them having their eyes set on participating as officials in the 2012 Olympics
CYP looks forward to working in partnership with the ETTA in the coming months to further explore
ways in which we can develop not just this event but the opportunities linked to this growing sport
and the benefits active participation can have on the young people we work with.
