Question - Tesseract Management Systems

How to play the SmartWork
‘Game of Management’
Please note: This game has been developed and used with two clients to date, but it has in
no way gone through the rigour, risk analysis, and detailed instructions that commercial
games undergo – so please accept, we offer this material in the best of faith, but we cannot
take any responsibility for your use of it, and it is your responsibility to think out clearly how
you intend to use it, what you need to modify, what you need to prepare and how you will
run it.
The pages are designed to be printed out in colour on A3 paper. Slide 2 is the board (with
instructions) and slides 3,5,7,9 & 11 as the cards referred to on the playing board (their
backing sheets are 4,6,8,10 & 12 which should be printed on the reverse – but be sure to
get the orientation the right way so that the right cards have the right backing). You will
need to edit the questions on slides 5,7 & 9 to reflect questions in your own organisation,
and you will probably need to print eight sets of slide 3 to have enough cards for the game
(multiply all of these quantities up if you are running several games at once, and make sure
whoever is facilitating each game knows the answers to the questions).
You will also need playing counters, and a die.
I would encourage you to try it out with friends first before you try to run it in a high profile
situation, that will give you a chance to iron out the bugs.
In a group of 16, we ran four games in parallel for 45 minutes, then took a break and
played a final on one board with the winner of each of the four earlier games.

Take Ownership
All players start on the
‘home square in ‘Zone 1’.
Highest initial die throw
starts and play progresses
to the player on the right.
Throwing a 6 from a home
square
automatically
promotes the player to the
home square of the next
zone
anticlockwise.
Throwing any other number
means the player has to
move his counter clockwise
round
the
appropriate
circuit, and do what is
required by the segment
landed on.
Within any circuit, players
move the number of spaces
indicated by the die, unless
that takes them through the
home square, in which case
they stop at the home
square.
When a player is required
to pick up a card, the action
on the card must be
followed as stated. Cards
must be shown to other
players when they are
picked up. When a card is
played, the player has a
maximum of 15 seconds to
provide an answer.
No
more than three cards of
any one type, or six in total
may be held by any player.
Players win by one of:
 Collecting
3
‘Good
Move’ cards
Or, at the end of forty-five
minutes:
 Having the most ‘Good
Move’ cards
 Being the only player in
the highest occupied
zone
 Being the player who
has on their most

highest occupied zone

This card can be used to avoid the downside
effects of ‘losing energy’ and ‘quick fixes’. If
you fall prey to these issues, share a true
experience of when it happened to you for
real, and what you think you have learned
from it. If the other players (or the ref) really
believe you have learned from your
experience, proceed directly back to the
relevant ‘home’ square. Discard this card
back to the deck after use.
This card can be used to move from zone 3
home to zone 4 home without throwing a 6.
Tell the other players a specific and practical
example of how you will deploy ownership
for a systematic approach within your
Process. If they (or the ref) believe you, and
believe it will work, then you may proceed to
zone 4 from zone 3. Discard this card back
to the deck as soon as you put forward your
idea.
This card can be used to move from zone 2
home to zone 3 home without throwing a 6.
Tell the other players a specific and practical
example of how you personally will think
differently about how you will take
systematic responsibility for performance. If
they (or the ref) believe you, and believe it
will work, then you may proceed to zone 3
from zone 2. Discard this card back to the
deck as soon as you put forward your idea.
This card can be used to move from zone 1
home to zone 2 home without throwing a 6.
Share with the other players a current area
of complacency that you believe you have in
how you manage your area. If they (or the
ref) believe you are being honest and
sincere, then you may proceed to zone 2
from zone 1. Discard this card back to the
deck as soon as you tell your story.

‘Good Move’
‘Keep Awake’

Collect a ‘Good Move’ card if you can
answer 2 out of 2 questions correctly, go to
‘Quick-fixed’ if you answer neither correctly,
and take your chances there. You can
accept or pass on this challenge. Discard
this card back to the deck as soon as you
have chosen.
Collect this card. The first player to collect
three of these cards wins the game outright.
If you require it, any ‘Good Move’ card can
be exchanged for either an ‘Insight’ or a
‘New Perspective’ card at any point in the
game – but the converse is not true.
This card can be used to avoid ‘falling
asleep’ from zone 4 to zone 1. If you throw
a 6 while on the zone 4 home square,
compliment one of the other players on
something that they said or have done and
how it has helped your thoughts on what you
could do. If the other players (or the ref)
agree this is valid, stay on the zone 4 home
square. Discard this card back to the deck
after use.
You must undergo an examination. Answer
the question posed to you. If you answer
the question correctly, as judged by the
questioner, you may proceed to the
‘recuperate’ segment. If you answer the
question incorrectly, or fail to answer, you
must go to the ‘long term sick’ segment and
take your chances there. Discard this card
back to the deck as soon as you have been
asked the question.
