Qualtrics Helpful hints Getting started: 1. Go to: http://www.qualtrics.com/ 2. Set up a free account Design a survey 1. Go to “My Surveys” tab and click create survey 2. Click “Quick Survey Builder” graphic 3. To change title or question, click on text and then start typing 4. Click “Create a New Item” 5. Change the question type/ response type in right column part of page (usually default is multiple choice – highlighted in green). a. Can change question responses to a table, slider, text entry, add timing etc. b. You can change the answer position to horizontal vs. vertical c. You can force responses 6. To copy a question (useful for a surveys with multiple questions that have the same format) click “copy question” on the right tool bar 7. To create a new item, click the green plus sign at the bottom of the page 8. Hint: to edit a particular question, make sure the question is selected (box checked) 9. To create conditions: (there may be other methods to do this, but this was the most intuitive to me) a. Create a multiple choice item (number of responses = number of conditions). Make the item ask participants to pick the first choice (note: make the choice labels the same, so participants don’t get confused about what to pick). b. Make sure to force the response (check the “force response” box this is found under the “validation options” in the right toolbar). c. Randomize the choice order by clicking the purple bold box on the left side of the question (right under the number). Note: this box will only show up if the question number is checked. You’ll see a drop down menu. Go to “randomization.” The default is no randomization. Change this to “Randomize the order of all choices.” This process will make it so that although participants always chose the first option, it will randomly vary what the choice corresponds to. d. Create the first question for your first condition using methods described above. e. Select the question and click the purple box on the left side again. Select “add display logic” 1 f. g. Make the display logic correspond to the question with the forced choice. h. Make the next/ stimuli for the condition and continue the same logic. e.g.: i. j. Make the questions for the next condition, and use similar process to what is described above (d-h). For the second condition, make the item display if the second option is selected on the forced choice question (where participants are asked to pick the first option). k. Note: if you want all P’s to see the same items after a particular stimulus, add those items without adding logic. This would go after all of the particular condition items. 10. You can add page breaks by selecting a question and picking the option in the right menu. 11. To move a question up or down in the survey order, make sure it’s selected (box checked for that item only) and then move your curser to the left side of the item. Two arrows (up and down) will appear. Click on the direction you want to move. 12. Note: Once you have a survey completed, there are options for you to copy items/ the template from that survey 13. Note: If you want to include graphics, click “show all question types” at the bottom of the change question type menu (right column). a. Under the text/graphic you can include graphics (you can upload them from your computer, or from the internet) or you can include files. 2 14. Important: It is highly recommended that you include a multiple choice item that asks participants not to choose any of the options. This way you can look at the data and exclude any participants that checked an option (these people are likely not reading directions carefully/ might be just clicking randomly). Test questionnaire/ examine data: You will want to test that your survey looks right and that the data is recording in a way that makes sense before you send it out to participants. 1. After editing survey (under edit tab) click “preview survey” 2. Input responses as though you are an actual participant 3. Click the “view results” tab. There are a couple of options for viewing the data. For me, the preferred option involves downloading data. To do this, click “download data” and scroll down to download an SPSS (or excel) file. 4. If things look odd, edit the survey and then repeat steps 1-3 in this section. 5. Otherwise, delete the data you created. Delete your own data: 1. Make sure to delete your own data after imputing it, so it does get mixed in with your actual participant responses. 2. Go to “view results” tab 3. Click “responses” select all responses and delete them 4. The survey should now be ready! Publish Survey: 1. Click “edit survey” tab click “Launch survey” (the globe) 2. Click “activate survey to collect responses.” You will then be provided with an anonymous survey link that you can send out to your participants 3. Note: There are options to share the survey on various social media cites (e.g. facebook, twitter) 3
