Concept ‘’o th' Week : GOAL SETTING
Goal setting is a critical step to continued athletic success. While it is human nature for a
person’s motivation to change from day to day, a solid set of written goals can keep an athlete on
track toward their dreams. A key is to set goals so that they are exciting but realistic. They also have
to be written down. Think about all the things that you have told yourself that you were going to do
in your life. Some of them you may have accomplished, many of them you probably forgot about
after time. If you want your dreams to come to fruition—write them down and review them on a
daily basis. Team mates, parents, coaches and friends are good people to keep aware of what your
goals are because they can help support your efforts. Write your goals down somewhere where you
will see them every day: on your kick board, on your mirror at home, on your notebooks at school.
The more you are reminded about your goals, the better your chances of achieving them.
Goals are not just for athletics. Most people who are successful are goal setters. Writing goals
for your academics, interests, or career will give you a step up on the rest of the world because most
people are not good goal setters. By using swimming to learn how to set and achieve goals, you are
learning a skill that can lead to greater success and happiness in life.
When setting goals use various time ranges: short, medium and long range goals. Short range
goals may be goals that you want to achieve this week. Medium range goals may be things that you
need to achieve in two or three months that keep you on track for the ultimate goal: the long range
goal. A long range goal could be 6 months, 6 years or more away. This is the ultimate dream that you
want to accomplish, for example winning Olympic Gold, getting a PH.D or finishing the book
Ulysses.
When setting your goals, it is important to consider the commitment level required to
accomplish each step along the way to achieving your goal. Be realistic about what you are willing to
commit to. Approach setting goals like its serious business; once you set a goal, you need to see it
through—don’t let daily twists and turns get in the way of your dreams.
