A TEAM of specialist police
investigators spent yesterday
working at the Gawa Christian
School on the northern tip of
Elcho Island trying to determine how an 11-year-old boy
died under a four-wheel-drive
vehicle at a school sports day.
The tiny school was yesterday shut as a mark of respect to
the young boy and his family.
While there have been suggestions the boy’s death was
not the result of a “tug of war”
between students and a Toyota
Troop Carrier, as had been reported,
Detective
Acting
Superintendent Chris Board
said yesterday preliminary in-
vestigations indicated the tragedy involved a rope tied to the
front of a vehicle.
“At this stage the initial indications are that the child was
involved in pulling a rope with
a number of other people,”
Supt Board said. “And during
that event of pulling the car the
child has slipped and gone
under the vehicle.”
The accident occurred in
front of horrified members of
the Gawa school community,
including the young boy’s
school friends. It is understood
several counsellors have been
flown to the remote school to
deal with the impact of the
tragedy on the community.
Gawa is situated on the northern tip of Elcho Island and is
about a 90-minute drive from
the main township of Galiwin’ku.
The Gawa school is a member of NT Christian Schools
and the organisation yesterday
released a statement saying
they were continuing to work
with the community to support
students and families in the
wake of the tragedy.
NT Christian Schools chief
executive Debra Twartz flew
to Elcho Island yesterday and
said details of accident had still
to be confirmed.

A semi-trailer loaded with concrete panels topples at the Jape Homemaker Village building site
Trailer takes turn for worse
A SEMI-TRAILER carrying
precast concrete panels
toppled over yesterday at the
construction site at Jape
Homemaker Village.
The fall happened about
6am.
A spokesman from Jape
said the tray of the semi-trailer
fell off as it turned a corner.
“It was with the contractors
– as they were turning in, the
panel just fell off the truck,” he
said. “It’s all been cleared up.
Lucky it happened before any
of the stores were open.”
NT WorkSafe was notified
of the incident.
There were no reported
injuries and the accident site
was cleared about 11.45am.
