DAN MOSES
Class of 1976
TENNIS
Throughout the '60s and much of the '70s, the Demarest tennis teams gained notoriety
for their outstanding achievements. Coached by Demarest Hall of Famer Rex Miller, year after
year, without exception, the teams finished at or near the top of the league and county
standings. Dan Moses played first singles for the Norsemen all four years, from 1973 to 1976.
In 1973, as a freshman, Dan helped the team win the State Group III title. As a sophomore, he
led the team to the North Jersey Section 1 title and, as a junior, to the Bergen County
championship. By the end of Dan's high school career, he was voted 1st Team All-County for
three years, and would later be voted to The Record's All-Decade Team for the 1970-1979 era.
During his high school years, Dan was also the New Jersey State 16-and-under champion, and
was ranked 8th in the 18-and-under division by the Eastern Tennis Association. (Dan still
considers one of his most notable achievements to be an early junior win over future Grand
Slam winner John McEnroe. And yes, McEnroe did cry after the match.)
After graduating from Demarest, Dan went on to be a four-year varsity starter at the
nationally ranked, Division 1 University of Pennsylvania, where he attended the Wharton
School of Finance; he would become co-captain of the team his senior year. After college, Dan
competed in and won both the Bergen County men's singles and doubles titles. He also taught
tennis privately with great success: in 1988, Dan coached former Norsemen tennis star
Meredith Cudrin to a Bergen County singles title, and many of Dan’s other charges went on to
play Division 1 collegiate tennis. Years later, Dan came back to coach the Demarest tennis
teams. He coached the boys teams from 1994 to 2003, and in 2002 Demarest won another
county title. Dan was, therefore, both a player on and the coach of a Bergen County
championship tennis team. His success in 2002 earned him a Bergen County Coach of the
Year plaque, making Dan the only person to earn 1st Team All-County and Coach of the Year
honors as a Norseman.
