ESS 258 Spring 2011 Fishing Manual Caryn Herrick, Britney Kruessel, Rob Rydeski, Braden Tice 1 Introduction how to sidearm cast with small closed reel poles and learn how to do basic knots using Fishing is a lifetime activity that can be enjoyed by all ages, young and old. In Wisconsin, anyone can fish in waters around the state with a purchase of a fishing license (although people under the age of 16 are not required to have one). Because fishing is a lifelong activity, it is important for physical educators to teach students about the various aspects of fishing. Elementary, middle, and high school students can learn and improve on many skills during a fishing curriculum. The main skills include how to correctly sidearm and overhead cast with open and closed reel fishing rods. In addition, students in a fishing curriculum can learn how to hook a lure, how to tie various fishing knots, and become more familiar about the characteristics of fish found near the region. an eyehole and rope. Middle school students might learn the basic types of fish that can be found in nearby waters, and be able to differentiate between them. In addition, they might learn how to overhead and sidearm cast with a closed and open reel pole. High school students can learn the specifics of what bait each fish prefers and where to find certain fish. In addition, high school students can refine their casting skills and learn how to tie knots with the wire and lure. This way, students can carry what they have learned from P.E. and be able to fish on their own outside of a school setting. In this manual, there are several different kinds of fishing activities, assessments, drills, lesson plans, and other related information that can be utilized in any physical education class. Elementary students can start out learning 2 Table of Contents 1. Rules Handout (4-5) 2. Equipment (6) 3. Safety Considerations (7) 4. Instant Activities (8-13) 5. Drills (14-28) 6. It is illegal to… release unused bait into Wisconsin’s lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. It is illegal to… fish for a species of fish during the closed season for that species (including catch and release fishing). The DNR mandates that Wisconsin residents who are 16 years old or older need a fishing license to fish in any waters of the state. Residents need a fishing license to take rough fish by hand, hook and line or to spear fish where allowed. Residents do not need a fishing license to take smelt, rough fish, or minnows with nets, traps, and seines of legal size. Nonresidents who are 16 years old or older need a nonresident fishing license to fish in Wisconsin waters. Use cones to identify area for students not to walk through so as not to step on rods. When carrying rods, carry upright to avoid contact with other fishers. Be aware of height of rod when carrying in an environment with low ceilings or low hanging objects. During a lesson, ensure students have sufficient personal space when casting to avoid contact with another student. During a lesson, have all students cast in the same direction. During a lesson, have all students place their rods on the ground when giving directions to avoid uninstructed casting. Following a lesson, students should be aware of moving with the rod and place them back in a designated area. 7 Instant Activities Fishing For Fitness Manual Group: Fishing Name of Activity: Fishing for Fitness Safety: Age Group: Elementary NASPE Standards Used: Standard 1, Standard 5 Equipment Needed: “Fishing poles” with magnets attached to end of line—one for each student 4 large hula-hoops Approx. 20 paper fish with magnets attached on front Writing utensil Music Organization/Set-Up: Each hula-hoop is set up at separate areas of the gym. In each one there are five paper fish with an activity written on the back of each one (i.e. do five jumping jacks)—this side should be facing down. The fishing poles should be lying next to each hulahoop. The class is divided into four, so there are an equal number of students at each hula-hoop. Directions: Students walk over to their designated hula-hoop, or “pond” and pick up their fishing poles. Students try to catch the fish by touching the magnetic end of their line with the magnetic part of the paper fish. Once they catch a fish they must perform whatever activity is written on the other side of the fish. To prevent accidently hitting another student with their pole, the teacher should stress not to swing their pole or line and be aware of other students around them. Fitness Component: Cardiovascular and strength endurance, improvement and practice of fundamental movement skills Once the music stops, students must carefully set down their poles and travel to a new pond performing whatever fundamental movement skill the teacher calls out (i.e. skipping). Source: ESS 112, Fundamentals of Movement Manual Group: Fishing Grade Level: Elementary Name of Activity: Flippidy Floppidy Fish Fitness component: flexibility, cv fitness NASPE Standards: 1, 5, and 6 Equipment: Small stuffed animal fish toy Noodle Hula Hoops Directions: Have each student walk in and stand next to a hula hoop (spaced out evenly on the floor) 8 On “Go” have each student pick up a noodle Use the noodle (which is symbolic for a fishing rod) to perform different stretches. Example: Holding it horizontally over your head and lift it as high as you can. Next, have each student “cast” the noodle into the hula hoop (while continuing to hold on to it) aiming at a fish. Once they hit their own fish, they should skip, hop, jump, jog, or gallop to Source: (i.e. Kruesel, 2011) another open hula hoop and try to “catch” that fish (without taking another’s spot). 9 Age Group: Middle School NASPE Standards: Standard 1, Standard 5 Remind students to be aware of who is around them and their surroundings to avoid collisions Instruct students to carry fishing poles vertically to Equipment: poly-spots (3 different colors, 1 polyspot per student) tackle boxes (1 per student) bobbers (1 per student) fishing poles (1 per student) reduce risk of Fitness Component: Flexibility, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Cardiovascular Endurance Organization: Designate three separate areas for the tackle boxes, fishing poles, and tackle boxes. Group like color poly-spots together and place them about half the distance of a basketball court away from the equipment. The class will be split into thirds, one third per color poly-spot. Game Play: injury (Rydeski, 2011) Students travel to pick up fishing pole via “inch worming.” Carefully carry the pole back via walking. Students karaoke to and from bobbers, picking one up. Upon return, complete 25 jumping jacks Students bear crawl to tackle box. High knees back. Hold a plank position for 20 seconds. After each group finishes, they then collect the next piece of equipment until each student has all 3. Safety 10 Manual Group: Fishing Grade Level: Middle School Name of Activity: Fish Aerobics Fitness Component: Muscular Strength Flexibility NASPE Standards: 1, 5, 6 Equipment: Gymnasium or empty area Fishing Rod (one for each student) Directions: When students enter gym, have them walk and find a fishing rod on the floor and sit on the floor next to it and wait for instructions. Teacher starts by saying, “In order to lift our HUGE fish that we are about to catch on to our boat, we must have our arm, legs, and core muscles ready and warmed up.” Perform each skill for 30 seconds: o Abs, arms, legs: Crunches Oblique bicycle crunches Hip raises Push ups Squats o Stretching: Grab rod in both hands Reach high to the sky To the floor Out to each side Source: Britney Kruesel, 2011 11 Manual Group: Fishing Grade Level: High School Students Name of Activity: Matchin Fish Fitness Component: Cardiovascular fitness Muscular Strength NASPE Standards: Standards 1, 2 & 5 Equipment: Fish Flash Cards, Cones Organization: All the students are lined up on the sideline of the court. The task cards are placed in the center circle. The cones are spread out with fish regulations (limits) on them and an activity, such as push-ups, sit-ups, plank holds, and wall sits. Directions: Students will be lined up at on the sideline. Students will do a locomotor movement, such as running, skipping, hopping, galloping or sliding, to the center to get a fish flash card. Students will then have to match the fish with the correct fishing limits, and then perform the activity listed. The student leaves the card there and does the same locomotor movement back to the center for another card. Safety: To prevent injury, students will move safely within the space. (Tice, 2011) 12 Manual Group: Fishing Grade Level: High School Students Name of Activity: Cast Away Safety: To prevent injury, students will use their fishing rods properly. (Tice, 2011) Fitness Component: Cardiovascular fitness Muscular endurance Muscular strength NASPE Standards: Standards 1, 2 & 5 Equipment: 10 hula hoops Fishing rods (one per student) Music Organization: All the students are lined up at half court of the gym. The 10 hula hoops are scattered throughout on one half of the gym. The other half of the gym is left open that is the “activity space.” Each student has a fishing pole and weight on the end to simulate casting a lure. Directions: Students will be lined up at half court facing the scattered hula hoops. Students will cast attempting to land your “lure” in the hula hoop. If the student misses he/she will do an activity in the “activity space.” Activities such as: push-ups, sit-ups, squats, squat jumps, or “wheel barrow” down and back with a partner. If the student makes it in the hula hoop they continue casting until they miss. 13 Drills Side Arm Cast Drill Elementary Drill Explanation: Students will line up, either on a poly-spot or in this case, a Diagram/ Layout: Cone (Tree, Debris) Yoga Block (Rock) Hoop (Trophy Fish) Student Goal: To provide students with an opportunity for increased repetition for practicing the side arm cast, with the intent to improve accuracy and level of comfort using the move. Goal: To set foundation of overhead casting for elementary students by having them concentrate on a few things, foot opposite the hand you write with should be in front, hand back by your ear, arm points to target. Drill Directions: Students will be divided up into 5 groups of 4. Each group will stand behind one of 5 designated cones The students will each have their own balloon When whistle is blown the first student in line can take the balloon and use proper form to release it. Then they can take two steps and again throw the balloon using the casting form. When first student goes to cast for a third time the second student can then begin. When all 4 students in the group get to the end of the gym they should sit down in line. When all 5 groups are done they should do the same thing again going back to the beginning. Increase difficulty by giving them bean bags to “cast” into a hula hoop. Keep eyes up and forward. Hold pencil tip down when moving. Watch out for other classmates. Cues: What’s special about the mouth? Fins can determine a fish! Look closely at the eyes! Look at the size! Goal: To practice fish identification by looking at the size, eyes, mouth, and fins of a fish. Drill Explanation: Students want to be able to identify as many fish as possible. o This is not a contest. Students do not compete against each other. Number of fish identified for the students’ benefit. Gym will be set up before class with the Fish Splash Cards set out around the gym in a round robin formation. Each student will be given an answer sheet and a pencil to write with. Tell the students that when the music stops, they are to move to the next station in a clockwise direction. Students are to go around to each Fish Splash Card station and write the correct fish name by the number that corresponds to the Splash Card on their paper. Stop the music one final time and call students to center of gymnasium While music is playing softly in the background, hold up each Fish Splash Card and have the students shout out the name of the fish as a review. Students should check over their answer sheet to see how well they did at recognizing each fish. You can increase physical activity by using a larger gym and more Fish Flash Cards or by having the students do different locomotor movements to the music. To Increase Difficulty: Include description instead of picture Include more Fish Splash Cards 24 Limit the time limit at each station To Decrease Difficulty: Include a description along with the picture Have students work with a partner Have the answer sheet be “matching” instead of fill in the blank type KEY: Station- includes fish identification card Direction of rotation- Clockwise References: Ali Weber, ESS 258 2010 25 Overhead Casting High School Standards: 1 and 2 Equipment: 25 Fishing poles with casting plugs, 20 plastic fish, 15 foam pins, 15 hula hoops, 10 cones, 10 foam bricks. Safety: Make sure students stay spread out so that they do not run into each other. Students always look behind them before they cast. Goal: To teach the students correct overhand casting form and have them become proficient with the skill. The students should complete the following tasks, foot opposite the hand you cast with should be in front, casting arm to 12 o’clock, and point at your target. Drill Explanation: Students will be spread out on the baseline of the tennis courts. The students will each have their own fishing pole. The equipment is spread out 20 feet in front of the students. The students will make ten casts each, keeping track of their points 1 point for landing your casting plug in a hula hoop, 2 points for knocking over a foam pin, 3 points for catching a plastic fish. The cones and foam bricks will act as structure (rocks or stumps) in the lake that you can get “snagged on.” If your cast hits a cone or brick, you lose 1 point. After ten casts total up your score, and return any fish to the “lake.” After each round, Cones students Hula hoops will shift one spot to Student the right to fish a Foam pins different spot on the Plastic fish lake. Increase difficulty by moving the students back, and by using small hula hoops with a lot of structure in the lakes Decrease difficulty by moving students closer to the targets and by taking out the rocks and stumps. (Standard 2) A) congratulate classmates when they achieve success in sidearm casting during the casting activities by saying “Wow, nice cast!” or “Yes! You hit the target!”. (Standard 5) Time When your boat is close to the shore When you are trying to not disturb the surface of the water too much because it could scare the fish away Organization Cues/Feedback = plastic fishes = empty plastic bin TR) Now we are going to play a warm-up game to help us remember when to use a sidearm cast! Everyone find your own personal space in court 1! IA) (MVPA) Wherever I call out one of the reasons to use a sidearm cast, we are going to do a movement. - When I say “It’s windy!” everyone will run around court 1, pretending to be blown around with a strong wind. 1 Fishing Poles 75 LX’s Performance Objectives When I say “Under obstacles!” everyone will get down and army crawl around court 1. - When I say “Close to shore!” everyone will get down on the floor of court 1 and do 5 crunches, bringing arms close to knees. - When I say “Don’t disturb the surface!” everyone will leap across the floor as quietly as they can. Touch your head if you remember all 4 moves. Let’s begin! When I call out a different reason for sidearm casting, switch to that movement.
