BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT COMPLETE ON ROUTE 721 (NEWTOWN
ROAD) AT CAROLINE, KING AND QUEEN LINE
Two-lane traffic can cross the bridge over Beverly Creek at the same time
FREDERICKSBURG – Route 721 (Newtown Road) at the Caroline County and King and Queen County line
is open to eastbound and westbound traffic after the
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)
completed a bridge replacement project over Beverly
Creek ahead of schedule.
Construction on the $2.7 million project began last
summer to replace the structurally deficient bridge,
built in 1952 on Newtown Road.
Construction was scheduled to be completed in July
2017.
Crews installed a temporary single-lane bridge in
March 2015 in order to begin construction on the
permanent structure. Temporary traffic signals
controlled one-way, alternating traffic until crews
completed the permanent bridge replacement project
earlier this month.
The new, two-lane bridge is open to traffic and follows the original alignment of the road.
Crews have removed the temporary bridge and signals.
Newtown Road carries an average of 440 vehicles a day, according to a 2016 VDOT traffic count.
