Performance improvements on Databases
• Sparse Columns
• Optimized storage for null values on SQL databases, space saving around 20-40 %
• Available since SQL Server 2008 R2

• Item level locks
• No more list level locks (bottleneck) when items or files are updated
Performance improvements on Databases
• Concurrent updates
• Now concurrently updates to list items avoid inconsistencies
• New AllListItemCount table in Content Databases to log history of single-item-operations
• Redundant tables
• Some redundant tables in the Database schema were deleted like subset tables
Performance improvements on Web Analytics
• No more Web Analytics service application
• New Analytics processing component as part of Search service application
• Supported for both SharePoint 2013 and 2010 (as external service)

• New Minimal Download Strategy (MDS) a.k.a Navigation Framework
• No full page request every time
• Asynchronously page load
• Just download differences between source and destination (deltas)

Performance improvements on content storage
• Shredded storage
• Now files are broken in smaller objects to be stored in databases
• Quicker file modifications because just change the specific objects
• Overall performance better reducing disk and network I/O traffic
• Versioning also supported
• Better storage usage helps to have more compact content databases

Distributed Cache
• A.k.a Velocity or AppFabric
• Enabled by default as a service during PSConfig
• Used for authentication tokens, social features, security trimming, Search and Access services

• Cache is located in-memory, recommended 8-16 GB RAM dedicated
• High availability not supported
