Introduction
Scratch Ball is a new sport game. It is
spectacular, fast and promotes the team spirit.
It has also a multitude of educational skills:
– promotes exercise
– playable by anyone: easy to play due to
the easy rules, no physical contact and
easy technical gestures
– created to promote team spirit
and team tactics
All these features make Scratch Ball a perfect
sport for children that can be practised in
leisure centres or in schools.
Object of the game
Scratch Ball is a team sport that is played with your hands. It opposes 2 teams of 6 players.
The object of the game is to make more points than your adversary in a fixed time.
To score, you have to catch the ball, thrown by a teammate, by the help of your « scratch » glove
and both, the catcher and the thrower, have to be in contact - with a part of their body (arm, leg,
knee, foot, etc.) - with a coloured base (see playing field).
Playing field
Field:
20 metres x 20 metres
Bases:
9 bases
2 metres from the sidelines
8 metres between each one

Equipment
Each player has to be equipped with a « scratch » glove that has to be worn at
your weaker hand (e.g. a right-hander has to wear the « scratch » glove on the
left hand).
You need also a « scratch » ball.
Pass and control
A player can throw or catch the ball outside of the coloured bases but he has to be inside of the
playing field. If one of the two players (thrower and catcher) are not in contact with a coloured
base, they don't score a point and the game continues.
If the ball falls on the floor, the ball has to be given to the adversary at the place where the
ball touched the floor!
Ball possession
The player who is in possession of the ball, may not:
– make more than 3 steps
– hold the ball longer than 5 seconds
If he does not respect these rules, the ball has to be given to his adversary!
He is allowed to:
– turn on one leg
– pass the ball to any of his teammates
The teammates of the player who is in possession of the ball can:
– move on the entire playing field
– position themself on one of the coloured bases for 5 seconds
A player is not allowed to position himself two times on the same coloured base consecutively.
The defense
If a team is not in possession of the ball, this team is in the defense phase. Their objective is to
regain the ball.
To do this, they have to intercept the passes of their adversary by the help of one of their hands.
BUT: If the defender intercepts the pass but the ball falls on the floor, the ball remains in
possession of the offending team. Moreover, the defenders may not stand on the coloured bases.
WATCH OUT! No kind of physical contact is allowed!!!
In the case that 2 players are arguing, the ball is given to the offending team!
If this rules are not respected, the adversary receives 1 extra point!

To score
A team scores 1 point, if a player of this team catches the ball with both hands while having a part
of his body in contact with a coloured base.
A team scores 2 points, if a player of this team catches the ball only with the « scratch » glove
while having a part of his body in contact with a coloured base.
The thrower has to be in contact with another coloured base too.
Game restarts
The ball goes into touch:
The game restarts with a throw-in for the adversary at the place where the ball left the playing
field.
After an infringement:
The ball has to be given back to the adversary at the place where the infringement was commited.
After a point:
The ball is given back to the adversary. The game restarts at the base where the point was made.
Play time
One game consists of 3 thirds of 15 minutes.
Adaptations
The described rules are the official Scratch Ball rules. However it seems to be important to adapt
certain rules for children under 10 years.
Object of the game
In order to simplify the rules for children, it is necessary to simplify the way of scoring:
A team scores 1 point on the only condition that the catcher catches the ball while having a part of
his body in contact with a coloured base (not the thrower!).
Playing field
Reduce the distance between the bases from 8 meters to 5 meters.
Ball possession
Abandon the 5 seconds rule.
Play time
3 thirds of 10 minutes.

Pass and catch technics
It is essential to have a fast pass game in order to get your adversary into trouble.
Moreover, it is important to learn how to control the ball without
« scratching » it and to pass on the ball as quickly as possible.
To do this, you have to catch the ball:
– only with your hand that does not wear the glove
– with your fingertips (as pictured beside)
Exercise
Place the players as pictured on the image below.
The player in the middel throws the ball to one of the three other players, who throws it back to
him. The player in the middle does the same with the other players, one after another.
The first time, the players have to catch the ball with the « scratch » glove, the second time, with
the fingertips (see picture « pass technics »).
