ASSOCIATED STUDENT GOVERNMENT MINUTES February 18th, 2008 (17th Meeting) I. Call to Order a. Called to Order at 7:00pm II. Pledge of Allegiance a. Led by Senator Whitley III. Roll Call a. Quorum Met IV. Approval of Minutes a. Minutes Approved V. Guest Speakers a. Dr. Gomez and Dr. Murr from Financial Aid b. Dr. Gomez: i. Director for Financial Aid and scholarships. ii. First I want to say congrats on the election. iii. We are here to beg for money from you guys. iv. We need support. v. ASG contributes 250,000 to ASG scholarship. vi. We just act as book keeper that keeps track of everything, but yall decide who receives the scholarship. vii. Dr. Trauth encouraged us to join a matching program for scholarship funding. viii. We go out and ask companies and organizations to match the money. ix. Southwest Foundation: non-profit foundation that helps students to attend college in 22 counties. x. It asks for a dollar to dollar donation. xi. So we would match it to 50,000 dollars. xii. We are here to ask if part of that 250,000 if 25,000 of that could go to match the money for the scholarship recipients. c. Dr. Murr: i. This allows ASG to multiple the value of your dollar. ii. It allows you to multiply your dollar to help students attend college. iii. It also helps the image of the university. iv. The money will only go to students in the 22 counties. v. There has already been about 60 students from Texas State apply for this scholarship. d. Galvez: Has the foundation put a maximum amount on the money they will match. e. Dr. Gomez: It is a dollar to dollar amount that we will match and we will do fundraising for it. Application deadline for the scholarship is Feb. 29th. We would love for ASG to fund the 25,000 dollars every year from the 250,000 that goes to scholarship. VI. Public Forum a. Tomy Luna: i. How many of you have had some amazing teachers from High school that you would say helped you get to where you are today? ii. Breakthrough Austin iii. Paid internship-$2000 and opportunities to get an extra $1000. iv. Teaching during the summer. v. Student Information Session on Feb. 22 at 7pm. vi. TL1116 for more information VII. President’s Report a. Dr. Martin Juel, former Dean of Students, passed away last week. b. On the second floor of LBJ there is an exhibit for Northern Illinois families. c. Thank you everyone who helped with the vote. d. I am proud to see the landslide that we worked so hard for be successful. e. f. g. h. i. j. We want to make sure and finish well so we will continue to work on that all year. Bobcat Statues: off 4th floor of student center, go and vote for which one you want. Thank you Chris Covo for stepping up and talking in one of your classes. Alex and I are going to a Board of Regents meeting on Friday. Dr. Gordon in philosophy department is coordinating a visit from Julliard for Common Experience. They are doing music, dance, and theatre paired up with Texas State art students in Evans Auditorium for a performance. If you want to help out with the event please let me know. VIII. Vice President’s Report a. Thank you all so much for showing up and doing your part at the FBS thing. b. If you haven’t signed the banner please do so. c. If you have your calendars……mark i. Student Relations Grievance session of Monday March 19. D. University Relations We are doing a parking and transportation task force to look for problems and come up with solutions. If you are interested to join committee please let me know. Meetings are on Friday’s at 1 pm. IX. Advisor’s Report a. RHA: b. c. XI. i. We are focusing on redesigning our study rooms in each residence hall. ii. Getting ready for spring break events and graduation. Transfer: i. Remind everyone that tomorrow is Transfer Trauma in the ballroom. City Council: i. After last meeting, city council decided to step back on renting task force because of negative feedback. ii. City council bringing up a noise task force for noisy college students. iii. Email me CM1277 with any questions or concerns. New Business A. Removal of Senator a. Bogan Durr had to resign. b. Friendly Amendment by Cole: add Jr. to whereas 3. Accepted. F. Discussion Item: Bobcatopoly a. We wanted to know if the Senate was interested in putting our name on the Bobcatopoly game. b. Schultz: which spot are you looking at. i. We can spend 50-400 meeting c. Varnadore: only 3 spots are left on the board. $150, $300, $400 dollar spots d. Robles: Is the university bookstore going to be selling this. i. I think they are only selling this through the business school. ii. But I think at Graduation and Convocation as well. e. Kasprazak: If you think about it Texas and ATM both have monopoly and since we just went D1 this might be a good idea. f. Domaschk: motion to purchase the $400 spot. i.
