Setting an AIMSweb Goal – One Example Winter Benchmarking – 2nd grade student scored 58 wcpm with 3 errors on R-CBM (above the 10th percentile for both national and local norms) WHAT SHOULD THE STUDENT’S GOAL BE?? For the Spring of Grade 2: National Cut Score = 92 (approx. 45th percentile) Using National Norms, 50th %ile = 106; 25th %ile = 82 Using Local Norms, 50th %ile = 111; 25th %ile = 87 I would like to see the student reach the cut score of 92. IS THIS REALISTIC?? There are 15 weeks until the next benchmarking period. If I apply the formula, I can determine what the student’s Rate of Improvement (ROI) would be if 92 was the goal: ROI (2.27) = Goal Score (92) – Initial Score (58) Weeks Elasped (15) According to Local Norms, students who are in between the 10th and 25th percentile, which is where this student’s benchmark score fell, usually have rates of improvement between 1.17 and 1.28 words per week. So, my calculated rate of improvement WOULD definitely shrink the learning gap AND would put the student in Tier 1 (nationally) by spring. But the ROI of 2.27 may be too ambitious. CAN HE DO IT?? Things to consider: o How motivated is the student? (So-so…) o How much time can we allot for intervention? (20 minutes daily) o Is there support from home? (So-so…) o What is the student’s attendance like? (okay) o What is the 40th %ile locally (where the child is most likely to be successful with the local curriculum)? (about 101 - 102??) Let’s shoot for 92 and monitor progress. If the student seems to be making more than 2.27 ROI after about a month, we can raise the goal to 100 or so.
