THE LOWER MAKEFIELD WOMAN’S CLUB Marcia Silbe, Editor February-March, 2015 BETTY DENNISON JEFFREY, LONG TIME CLUB MEMBER AND FLORIDA RESIDENT, HAS PASSED AWAY. OUR CONDOLENCES GO OUT TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS. NOVEMBER CULTURAL TRIP On Thursday, November 14, 2014, Lenore Rosen, Trip Committee Chairwoman, led a group of Club members on a guided tour of the third floor of the Princeton Art Museum. The collection spanned 700 years of Western European art, including representative works of the Medieval, Renaissance, Rococo and Impressionist periods, among others. The tour was conducted by a docent of the museum, who imparted facts about the methods and styles of painting to the group. After the tour, most of the members enjoyed a delicious lunch at Chambers Walk restaurant in Princeton. It was a lovely day for all, and we heartily thank Lenore for doing a wonderful job in arranging this treat for us. NOVEMBER 20, 2014 GENERAL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS Our annual Birthday Celebration Meeting, coordinated by Linda Lee, was definitely an enjoyable time for all of us. This was the first time that we held our meeting at the beginning of the day. General items were discussed. Fund Raising Chair Beth Sellers advised us that the proposed Designer Bag Fundraiser might have to be postponed until a suitable location is found, and that she will also be compiling a list of about 20 suitable charitable foundations for us to consider as next year’s recipients of our efforts. If you have any suggestions for her, she is requesting that you send her an e-mail. President Rose Ann Palestro moved to make a slight change in the by-laws which affects the Executive Board Meetings, and a second discussion and vote will be carried out at the January, 2015 General Meeting. President Palestro also announced that Marylin Hankins has graciously accepted the position as Club Parliamentarian. Treasurer Valerie Mix stated that we netted over $1500 from the Fall Card Party at the Spring Mill Country Club. The fundraiser at Vince’s Pizza in Yardley on Wednesday, November 19, 2014, also appears to have been successful. Community Concerns Chair Penny Polo is collecting money to be spent on personal care items and household cleaners for the clients of Bucks County Housing. Newsletter Chair Marcia Silbe requested that any member who has items of news of interest to the Club contact her by email, so that those items could be added to the Newsletter. Membership Chair Gail Lester introduced our three new members: Darlene O’Brien, Pat Lehnert, and Linda Curran. Daphne Mroz is starting a new group comprised of women who would be willing to help other members in need of rides to doctor’s appointments, or meals because of lack of family support in the area. She passed around a sign-up sheet, and anyone who is interested in helping is asked to contact Daphne. We then enjoyed our birthday lunch. We were seated at tables corresponding to our birth months, provided with cupcakes and candles, and after lighting our candles we sang HAPPY BIRTHDAY to ourselves. After enjoying our food and wonderful desserts, Hilda Carman won the 50-50. Author Mary A. Shafer then provided us with a talk and visuals about her historical book, Devastation on the Delaware-1955 Flood. DECEMBER 16, 2014 ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY On Tuesday, December 16, 2014, we held our annual Holiday Party at Washington’s Crossing Inn from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM. As always, the food was delicious. This year, as a special treat, we were entertained by the talented jazz musician, Anthony Palestro. He was accompanied by two others, a keyboardist and singer. Lenore Rosen gave a beautiful impromptu performance of “Silent Night”. Anyone wanting to dance could do so, as was demonstrated by Lenore Rosen and Valerie Mix who did a spirited Lindy Hop. The 50-50 of $37.00 was won by Gail Lester. Beth Sellers won the Lenox Santa and Christmas Tree, and the basket of goodies was won by Lydia Herbert. It was a lovely celebration. COMMUNITY CONCERNS Chairwoman Penny Polo has announced that the Woman’s Club has made a sizeable donation to Buck’s County Housing. We have donated more than 100 calendars, 15 gift bags containing shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc., and cleaning supplies purchased with the $73.00 collected from member contributions at our previous meetings. Penny expresses her thanks to everyone. FUND RAISER REMINDER Valerie Mix would like to remind everyone that she is still selling the unique pins/pendants to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project. If you know of anyone who has served in the Military, this pin would be a lovely gift. One hundred percent of the profits go directly to our wounded soldiers.
