County Youth Futsal Competition 2015
In 2014/15, London FA will run their first Winter Youth Futsal Competition. The competition is open to clubs
to include boys U10s, U12s, U14s and U16s competition.
The London FA County Youth Futsal Competition aims to allow teams of all abilities the chance to try Futsal
in a competitive environment with the opportunity of progressing in a National Competition.
The FA is particularly keen to increase the exposure and opportunities to play Futsal for the youth age
groups across England. The technical benefits of Futsal are well documented, and the game can have an
important role in the technical skill development of young football players. Many countries across the world
that we admire for their progressive and expansive style of football and rich pools of playing talent integrate
Futsal into the early phases of youth development.

What is Futsal?
This is a common question for anyone new to the game.
Futsal is FIFA and UEFAs recognised format of 5-a-side football and is widely played across the world. It is the
fastest growing indoor sport in the wold. The nature of the game places a large emphasis on technical skill
and ability in situations of high pressure, and is subsequently an excellent breeding ground for football
competencies that can be translated into the 11-a-side format of the game.
Many of the top world class footballers played Futsal in their youth and credit it with supporting their
footballing development. Players of the calibre of Pele, Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo & Iniesta
to name but a few who have played Futsal to develop their skills.
“Futsal was important in helping to develop my ball control, quick thinking, passing….also for dribbling,
balance, concentration…. Futsal was very, very important, no doubt.” – Pele, World Cup Winner: 1958, 1962
& 1970
Futsal is a five-a-side game, played on a flat indoor pitch with hockey sized goals and a size 4 ball with a
reduced bounce. It is played to touchlines and all players are free to enter the penalty area and play the ball
over head-height. Games are 15-20 minutes per half, played to a stopping clock (similar to basketball) with
time-outs permitted.
Research indicates that individual’s playing Futsal receive the ball six times more often than they would do
when they are playing 11-a-side football, allowing players to perform more individual techniques such as
passes, controls, fakes, feints, dribbles and runs with the ball (Liverpool John Moores University, 2001).
