Speaking before a Group (Ridicule, Rejection) Heights Insects and bugs Failure Deep water Clowns Death Flying Loneliness Germs Scott’s message on Psalms 91 reminded us that fear has no hope against God at work in our lives. Repeat: Fear has no hope! Do you feel that way today? Do you live that way today? It is estimated that 80% of Christians today are bound by some sort of fear. Not talking about fear of consequences – eg you don’t get to close to the edge of the roof because you are afraid you would fall off. Don’t speed because you are afraid you will get a ticket. Those fears are legit, keeps you from taking unnecessary chances, keeps you away from places you are not supposed to go, or doing things you are not supposed to do. The fear of consequences in fact is used by God as a way to keep us in line. Lev 26:3-13, all the blessings of following; 26:14-16 if you do not obey I will bring upon you sudden terror, wasting disease, set my face against you, you will be defeated by your enemies. THAT is scary. The fear of God removing His hand of favor and protection is an effective motivator to keep us obedient. I’m talking about the fear irrational fear, fear that oppresses you. That kind of fear leads to dred, paranoia, inability to act. Fear that keeps us from evangelizing, taking risks, advancing the Kingdom, even doing simple everyday things. Fear is a faith revealer – what we fear reveals what we trust. Fear is placing faith in the wrong kingdom…the kingdom of darkness rather than the Kingdom of Light. My prayer is that we all walk out of here different today in regards to the impact of fear in our lives. How does fear work? 3-legged stool example. The most stable footing is something with 3 legs because all 3 can touch the ground equally. Fear comes along and knocks off one leg, shaking your confidence and causes instability. In that instability we react…probably not in a positive manner, the situation gets worse, we lose another leg and now we are completely unstable…resulting in one of two outcomes…we start flailing around wildly like the Tasmanian Devil with no control damaging everyone and everything around us or we lock up, become paralyzed with paranoia. Sources of fear - - Satan…he knows fear can quickly and indefinitely distract us from Kingdom purposes so it is one of the weapons he uses against us. If you are fearful, there is something anti-God at work. Sin – causes insecurity, doubt, fear because it separates us from the perfect love of God and leaves us feeling alone and isolated without defense. What you take in – Feel your mind with images, songs and stories of fears and guess what you get out? Irrational fear. Snakes On A Plane movie example. There is no place we can get physically further from snakes than on a plane, but someone makes a movie about it, you watch it, and suddenly the next time your on a plane your freaked out about snakes crawling around on the floor Lack of spiritual maturity and depth on our part – we don’t know God’s assurances or instructions on how to handle fear and we are easily taken out by things that mature believers move past quickly. Spiritual immaturity is a lot like the rocky soil in parable of the sower. Seeds take root and start to grow but are quickly choked out by rocks and heat and die off. In the same way the immature believer can have shoots of good growth but cannot sustain when simple fears attack… the growth dies off. Oswald Chambers tells us that fear takes root when we don’t know the assurances of God for us. How do we overcome fear – 2nd Tim 1:7 “God did not give us the spirit of fear, but power, love and a sound mind. God has equipped each of us with the ultimate fear fighter – the Holy Spirit. That Spirit is not timid or fearful. The Holy Spirit is Bold and Powerful. Power – dunamis, dynamite. Incredible burst of situationally-altering energy. The power that raised Jesus from the dead. The Holy Spirit has the resurrection power to overcome Satan. Fear cannot stand up to the Holy Spirit. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Power of the Holy Spirit also helps us to overcome sin. Phil 2:13 – God works within you to will and to act according to his good purpose. The dynamite Power of Spirit can fill ordinary fisherman like Peter and Andrew and James and John with great boldness to overcome fear of imprisonment/death to boldly proclaim the word and forever change the world. Acts 4:13 “When [the crowds] saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” It’s real power. The Holy Spirit is also full of love. Love is a repellent to fear. WD40 example. Rocket Chemical Company. Water displacement perfected on the 40th try. 1 John 4:18 perfect love casts out all fear. Love makes us feel secure, valued, validated. The Holy Spirit brings that kind of security blanket to us, reminding us when we feel worthless that we were created by God to do great things that He planned from the beginning. When we are feeling lonely, the Holy Spirit brings us the presence of God to remind us we are not alone. When we are feeling shamed and not able to approach God, the Holy Spirit reminds us of His forgiveness and the righteousness that covers us by the Blood of Jesus. The Holy Spirit brings with it a Sound mind – The Greek Word here is not the word for sanity or peace? Sound mind means confidence. Fear and confidence are opposites. Prior to the filling of the Spirit, Peter was fearful. He saw Jesus get taken away and knew the same could happen to him so when people approached Peter and accused him of being with Jesus, he fearfully rejected Jesus and hid for his life. But after the filling of the Spirit in Acts 2,3 and 4 we see Peter develop amazing confidence where even facing imprisonment and death he stands boldly proclaiming Jesus is the only way. What a radical change in a matter of weeks. What causes that change? Confidence from the Holy Spirit. Fear cannot operate in the presence of confidence. Confidence allows you to stand up to fear and move forward knowing that victory is already yours! Fear shrinks back, confidence says I was made for this moment. Fear immobilizes, confidence mobilizes. Confidence says regardless of what I face, all I see is the ability of Christ within me. Driver example. Regardless of what the hole looks like, I am very confident I can deliver on it. WD40 can - How many of you have a can of WD 40? Why? Because it works. Read three attributes on can…and drives out moisture. The Holy Spirit is God’s WD40. Then put Holy Spirt sleeve on can and read the 3 attributes…and drives out fear. How many of you would buy cans of the Holy Spirit if you could get it. You don’t have to buy it…you already have it in you but you just need to put it to work. Wasp Spray example Aerosol to carry the chemicals Solvent to dissolve the exoskeleton of the head and allow the toxin to enter Toxin to enter and attack the brain Parallels to Holy Spirit – power to pick us up and carry us, love to dissolve the hold of fear, and confidence to take action So why is it that we have this incredible fear fighter within us yet 80% of us are bound by fear? Because we are not using it! We need to apply the same way you apply WD40 or Wasp spray. Shake it up, aim it, and spray it on the problem! In the areas of fear, 2nd Tim 1:6 says stir up the Spirit within you to take charge. Take aim on the fear through prayer and scripture. Then you spray directly on the fear by walking in confidence of the assurances and direction from the Holy Spirit – take a risk and know that the God has your back and that the Spirit will bring to mind whatever you need when you need it. Brooklynn example – not able to sleep. Wrote 2nd Tim 1:7 on the board. She memorized it, spoke it out every night before going to bed, and God came to her in a dream and told her he would bring the Peace that He promised her and she sleeps in her bed each night. When fear of the dark comes up, she uses that verse on it. Did you know that God promises you a good night’s rest? Isa 32:18 – My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest. When we are not experiencing that at home I don’t sit back, I apply the Holy Spirit against fear. I get out olive oil, anoint my house and pray out Isa 32:18 in the affirmative – that this is a peaceful dwelling and a secure home and it is an undisturbed place of rest. So why am I speaking to you about overcoming fear today. I’ve had this message since end of January and I’ve been asking God for the time to share it. Two weeks ago when Scott asked me to preach today I knew the timing is now and it is no coincidence. You and I as believers need to stand now against principalities and powers that are set to remove God from our nation. Most directly, I am talking about the pending Supreme Court’s decision on same sex marriages. A number of Bible scholars and Christian Leaders believe this ruling has the potential to be the most destructive force our nation has ever seen. Rick Joyner believes this could be the abomination that causes desolation described in Daniel 9 and 11 and referenced by Jesus in Matt 24. Rick feels led that this is tied to end time prophecy and I agree. There can be no middle ground on your standing here, and in order to stand for God we need to overcome perhaps the most powerful fear of all, the fear of man. Fear of man encompasses all those fears that threaten your security – fear of rejection, loss of your income, isolation, ridicule and punishment. And as such fear of man is extremely effective at halting evangelism and causing believers to shrink back. When we choose to boldly and in love align ourselves with Spiritual truth and subsequently make choices to avoid employers, businesses, organizations – the world will lash back out. The believer who does not stand with confidence will fall – just as Peter denied Christ. Tenets of marriage: Genesis, along with rest of the Bible, is that absolute authority. Genesis is literal history and is confirmed by observed science. Genesis 2:18-24 It was not good for man to be alone. Woman was created to be the man’s suitable helper. Man and woman are to be united. Marriage between one man and one woman is healthy and productive. It is the complete pair and there is no other validated to be so. That marriage can exist only between one man and one woman is not based on faith, religion or revelation alone, but on Natural Law – a higher law, written on the human heart and discernible through the exercise of reason. That same higher law and reason that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr used to show that racial equality is just and right. – Defend Marriage Pledge It’s not about whether homosexuals should have the same legal rights as everyone else. (They should.) It’s not about whether homosexuals should be treated with love and respect. (They should.)…It’s about the nature of marriage and its role as a public institution. – James Robison Marriage is the preeminent human social institution, preceding civil government. Civil institutions do not create marriage nor manufacture the right to marry those that are not capable of marrying. – Defend Marriage Pledge Any other form of marriage is counterfeit and degrades the value of true marriage and brings harm to society as a whole (Lev 18:25). “If people of the same sex can legally ‘marry’ each other, we will lose any rational basis for barring polygamy, group marriage, and incest.” – James Robison How do you stand? Follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit. This is why I am speaking today. Do not validate or participate. Do not acknowledge evil as good. Do not attend the ceremony – your presence is a validation. Wedding cake example. Use your power of choice (where you spend your money and your resources) to support businesses and organizations that align with God and avoid those that oppose. Standing will be divisive – Christ did not come to bring peace. Matt 10:34-35. The scripture is clear, there will be backlash for standing for God. The scripture is clear that those who do not stand risk falling away. But scripture is also clear: Proverbs 29:25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe. The Lord has called me to get bold and get involved in standing for His definition of marriage. I know that it is possible this stand could ultimately cost me friends, my job, my standing in certain circles. The consequences – inability to pay my mortgage, send my kids to college, loss of health insurance, are very real. But the consequence of not standing – of not hearing well done good and faithful servant is far, far more powerful. So in the power, love and confidence of the Spirit, I will stand. I urge each of you, just as Joshua did, choose this day, where you stand on same sex marriage. And act as God directs you. At a minimum prayerfully consider signing the Defend Marriage Pledge that will be delivered to the Supreme Court this week. www.defendmarriage.org
