Rules
The competition will be played in accordance with the FIDE regulations.
A player who wins their game scores one point (1), a player who loses their game
scores no points (0) and a player who draws scores a half point (0.5).
The time allocated for each player on the clock for every round will be one hour.
The competition system will depended on the number of registered players. Should 8 or
less players be registered the competition will be played in round-robin system. Should
more than 8 players register, the competition will use the Swiss system.
I. The round-robin system
Each participant plays every other participant an equal number of times, according to
the following tables, depending on the actual number of participants registered.
3 or 4 registered players:
Rd 1: 1-4, 2-3. Rd 2: 4-3, 1-2. Rd 3: 2-4, 3-1.
5 or 6 registered players:
Rd 1: 1-6, 2-5, 3-4. Rd 2: 6-4, 5-3, 1-2. Rd 3: 2-6, 2-6, 3-1, 4-5. Rd 4: 6-5, 1-4, 2-3. Rd
5: 3-6, 4-2, 5-1.
7 or 8 registered players:
Rd 1: 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5. Rd 2: 8-5, 6-4, 7-3, 1-2. Rd 3: 2-8, 3-1, 4-7, 5-6. Rd 4: 8-6, 7-5,
1-4, 2-3. Rd 5: 3-8, 4-2, 5-1, 6-7. Rd 6: 8-7, 1-6, 2-5, 3-4. Rd 7: 4-8, 5-3, 6-2, 7-1.
Should there be an odd number of players, the highest number counts as a bye,
meaning each player will automatically have a win in a certain round.
The player with the highest number of points at the end of the rounds wins. In case of a
tie, the result of their game against each other will be used to break the tie. Should that
be a draw the result against the next best player will be used to break the tie. Should
that still not break the tie a 5 minute game will be played to decide who places higher.
II. The Swiss system
Each player will play a total number of 7 rounds and the paring will be done so that
opponents will have equal amount of points. For the first round, there will be a random
draw, since all players have 0 points. Thereafter, players with the same amount of
points will be drawn against each other. For example, after the second round players
with 2 points will play other players with two points, players with 1.5 points will play
players with 1.5 points, players with 1 point will play players with 1 point, and so on, in
order for the player with the most points at the end of the tournament to be the winner.
No player can play another more than once. Each player will alternate in using white
and black pieces from one round to the next. Players that have played white in one
round will be drawn against players that have black in that round. Should that not be
possible a draw will be made to determine which player will use the white or the black
pieces twice in a row. If a player that has doubled on a color once has to play with a
player that has not doubled, the latter will automatically have to double the color they
used in the previous round.
The order of the draw from round two onwards will be done for the group of players with
the highest amount of points first. The next highest group of players will follow until the
parings for the group with the least number of points are also drawn. Should an uneven
number of players have the same amount of points, or the players with the same
amount of points have already played each other, the odd players out will face a player
from the next higher or lower group, depending on the players already paired and the
color of the pieces they used thus far.
The player with the highest number of points at the end of the rounds wins. In case of a
tie, the result of their game against each other will be used to break the tie. Should that
be a draw, the Buchholz system will be used as a tie-breaking system. Each player's
Buchholz score is calculated by adding the raw scores of each opponent and multiplying
that by the player's raw score. Should that still not break the tie a 5 minute game will be
played to decide who places higher.
