TEAM GAMES CAPTURE THE FLAG grades 3-8 Equipment: pinnies, flags, hula hoops, mats, music! Two teams, each have their own side of playing area in which they are safe Both teams are protecting a “flag” that is inside a hula hoop o We play with two hoops and two flags on each side to have game last longer Both sides have a mat in opposite corners as “jail” Once you cross the imaginary line separating the teams you may be tagged If you are tagged you must go to that team’s jail Someone from your team must successfully come over without being tagged in order to save you If they succeed, you and that person from your team get a “free walk back” to your side NO GOING TO GET THE FLAG FROM JAIL 5 people = jail break One “puppy guard” for each hoop Game is over when all four flags are on one side of the gym VARIATIONS: Four team capture the flag o Split gym in to 4 equal parts o Each team gets one hoop and one flag o Each team has a mat in their corner for jail o If you and two of your teammates are in jails (the same jail or different jails) you get a JAILBREAK, must yell it and meet back on your side for a group high 5! TEAM HANDBALL – focus on offense & defense grades 3-4 Equipment: small ball, cones if needed, music! Assign students a partner, then combine pairs to make groups of 4 Set up boundary lines within your designated area like below: Smiley faces = offense X = defense Blue lines in between offense and defense separate the two, offense cannot pass the line, nor defense Offense is trying to successfully pass the ball keeping it away from the defense Defense is trying to block, intercept, create chaos against the offense WORDS STUDENTS ARE FOCUSSING ON o Interception o Blocked pass o Incomplete pass (fumble) o Turnover This activity helps students get back in to using team handball vocabulary If defense intercepts, they switch with offense Keep track of successful passes VARIATION grades 3-6 Equipment: pinnies, small ball, cones if needed, music Split playing area in to four equal parts Same game concept: two on two, but now instead of staying in one lane, use a squared area to allow students to move to open space Use team handball rules – 3 steps, 3 passes If an offense team makes 3 passes, they earn 1 point First team to 5 points wins! o ADDED DIFFICULTY Add bowling pins along endline boundary, once a team makes 3 successful passes they can “shoot” and try to knock down a pin. First team to knock down the LAST pin wins! use an exit slip after this lesson to ask questions like: o how do you know you are on offense o what is the role of the defense o how do you play correct defense o how could you explain how to correctly defend a player to a teammate who has no idea o what is the offense trying to accomplish o what is the defense trying to accomplish o what is the definition of: STEP IT UP A NOTCH: CAPTAIN BALL grades 3 & 4 Offense, defense, shooting, passing, goalkeeping Split playing area up in to 6 areas end areas are set up with bowling pins along back wall, goal keepers stand in this area protecting pins area in front of goalies is the Shooting area area in front of shooters is the Passing area Students must work together getting the ball from the goal keepers to the passers to the shooters in order to try to knock down pins to earn points They are working on communication, rules of team handball, throwing and catching successfully If a ball is not caught, it can not be used to shoot, it must be passed back to the other team, acting as a turnover Switch roles often until all pins are down! stars = pins + = goalkeepers = shooters x = passers SPACE INVADERS grades k-8 Equipment: yarn balls (to throw), cones, bowling pins, small balls (to be placed on top of cones as targets), hula hoops SETUP OF PLAYING AREA: each half of the playing area should have bowling pins, cones with mini balls placed on top and a hula hoop structure scattered throughout to make targets at different throwing distances. Students will be split in to two different teams Students are working together to try and knock down all objects on other teams side of gym Once an object has been knocked down it stays down VARIATIONS: If student catches a ball thrown by the other team, they may pick up and fix one target on their side Create a knocking down order: o Example: bowling pins must be knocked down first, then balls off cones, then hula hoop structure Specific throwing motion for each target o Underhand toss at bowling pins, overhand throw at balls on cones and hula hoop structure GAGA BALL grades 3-8 Equipment: team handballs, medium sized balls, lines on gym floor, abc warm-up, definition cards, music! Using gaga ball rules, add: o When student is “out” they must go to the teacher and receive a card with a definition on it, reading the definition they must go spell that word using the ABC warmup, return their card to the teacher and then they can resume trying to get back in to the game VARIATION: o Hand out word cards instead of definition cards and hang up definitions around the gymnasium, student must find the correct definition and when they do a specific exercise will be there waiting for them. COOPERATIVE PE CHALLENGE grades 4-8 Partner Jumping Jacks o Together, how many in one minute o Versus, how many in one minute Crab Walk Beanbag Pick Up, how many can you get? Partner plank taps, back and forth, how many in one minute? Partner Sit Up Throw & Catch one minute, how many catches? On the Move Throw and Catch, one minute, how many catches? CURL UP RELAY RACE grades 4-8 Equipment: bean bags, buckets Students lay in a line toe to head First student reaches behind their head and grabs one bean bag, performs a curl up and places the bean bag in the hands of the student laying down in front of them, stands up, runs and lays down at the end of the line Repeat process until bean bag makes its way to bucket at the end of the gym Once a bean bag is placed in bucket, all students run back and repeat the process This is a timed challenge, allow for group discussion on how they can improve the number of bean bags they can successfully get to the bucket BATTLESHIP grades k-4 Equipment: yarn balls to throw, mats for ships, bowling pins, scooters for rowboats Set up mats in a large circle within playing area, about 5-10 giant steps away from one another. These are the Battleships Assign 3-4 students to each ship At each ship there should be three bowling pins in front of the ship, facing the other ships, and there should also be one or two scooters per ship, acting as rowboats. Assign one or two students to be on the rowboats. This is the only student who is allowed to retrieve yarn balls for their teammates on the battleship Rest of students must stay on battleship (mat) at all times Students are throwing yarnballs at the other ships, trying to knock down their bowling pins, destroying the battleships If a student on a ship catches a ball that is thrown to them by another boat, they may pick up a pin that has been knocked down, acting as if they are repairing their ship o For younger grades, you can allow the rowboats to toss the yarn balls to the teammates on the ship, and those catches can result in picking up a pin ASTEROID BLAST grades k-6 Equipment: small balls to throw, giant exercise balls Use two lines on your floor or make two lines using tape or cones that your students are not allowed to cross Divide class into two teams. Randomly roll out small balls. The object of game is to throw the small balls at the large exercise ball (asteroid) in the center of the two lines. The first team to make the asteroid roll across the other team’s line is the winner Students are not allowed to step over the boundary line Students are allowed to cross over the line to retrieve a ball to throw, but must retreat back behind designated line when ready to throw. There is no touching the large ball, only throwing objects at it to redirect its movement HOOPLA grades 3-8 Equipment: hula hoops, bowling pins Split students in to two teams Split playing area in half Line up bowling pins along end line of each side of area Students are trying to knock down bowling pins by kicking hula hoops across the playing area If a student gets hit with a hula hoop kicked from the other team, that student is “out” and must go stand outside playing area If a student successfully jumps and lands INSIDE of a hula hoop that is kicked from the other team, their whole team who is “out” comes back in! And the person who kicked the hoop is “out”
