Purpose
1.
This document outlines the policy and procedures for the appointment of coaches for Northern
Suburbs Junior Women’s Hockey Club (NSJWHC) teams.
Scope
2. This policy applies to all NSJWHC office bearers and other personnel appointed to assist in the
running of the club such as selectors, coaches, and managers.
Policy Statement
3.
NSJWHC is committed to implementing a fair and transparent process for the appointment of
team coaches.
Appointment of Coaches
4.
The NSJWHC Executive (“the Executive”) will call for expressions of interest and subsequently
appoint a coach for each team.
5.
Ideally, coaches will be appointed well before the commencement of the playing season to
allow coaches to prepare for the season and to observe player selection activities.
6.
Coaches may be drawn from members of Northern Suburbs Hockey Club and from other
suitable bodies or individuals as determined by the Executive.
7.
Any interested individual is welcome to nominate to be a coach, however, the Executive may
request potential coaches to demonstrate relevant skills and experience.
8.
Relevant criteria for the appointment of selectors may include, but not be limited to:

Previous coaching experience

Coaching qualifications

Hockey playing experience

Hockey umpiring experience

Availability throughout the season
9.
Individuals nominating to be a coach are to declare any potential conflict of interest. The
Executive will determine whether such conflict of interest will preclude appointment as a coach in any
or all teams. Examples of a conflict of interest may be situations where a nominee:

Has also nominated to be a selector in the same age group

Has a daughter who is likely to play in a team for which the prospective coach has nominated.
Responsibilities of the Executive
10. To seek nominations for coaching positions, assess such nominations and appoint coaches in a
timely manner, prior to the commencement of each playing season.
11.
To advise all nominees of their appointment or otherwise.
12. To provide training or support to coaches as deemed necessary, for example, from the Club or
BWHA Development Officers. The Executive may also decide to pay the course fees for coaches
undertaking relevant accredited coach training.
13. To act at all times in an impartial manner and in accordance with the standards of behaviour laid
down in the Northern Suburbs Hockey Club Constitution and the Brisbane Women’s Hockey
Association Operations Manual.
Responsibilities of Coaches
14. To attend all relevant training sessions and fixture games, or when unable to be present, to make
suitable alternative coaching arrangements for the team practice or fixture.
15. To ensure that all players in their team are provided equal development opportunities including
equal playing time throughout the season, as far as practicable.
16. To ensure that in U7 “Rookey” games, all players are rotated equally through all three playing
zones throughout the playing season.
17. To ensure that in U9 teams, all players have the opportunity to play in a wide variety of
positions during the season, in order to develop all-round skills and to commence the process of
determining the position(s) in which they may ultimately be best suited.
18. To ensure that in U11, U13 and “J” teams, all players have the opportunity to play in more than
one position. The benefits of this include: the development of all-round individual skills and tactical
understanding; development of player depth across all positions; avoidance of “pigeon-holing” players
into particular positions too early in their playing careers; and enhancing players’ opportunities for
representative selection.
19. To act at all times in an impartial manner and in accordance with the standards of behaviour laid
down in the Northern Suburbs Hockey Club constitution and the Brisbane Women’s Hockey
Association Operations Manual.
Responsibility of the Development Officer
20.
To develop and implement a club-wide development policy.
21.
To provide support to coaches as required.
2
22. To act at all times in an impartial manner and in accordance with the standards of behaviour laid
down in the Northern Suburbs Hockey Club constitution and the Brisbane Women’s Hockey
Association Operations Manual.
