Southern California Tennis On Campus Section Championship

February 11-12, 2017
2017 Championship Rules
“POOL” PLAY
Teams will be placed into pools for round robin play. Schools may enter a maximum of two
teams, which will be placed into different pools. The Tournament Committee will determine the
distribution of teams into pools. If a school has additional teams, they may place them on the
waiting list for consideration.
DETERMINING THE WINNER OF EACH POOL:
The match win-loss record determines order of finish of the teams in a pool.
If two teams have the same win/loss record, the head-to-head winner of the two tied teams will
advance.
If there are three teams with the same win/loss record, and no one team has wins over the other
two teams, then the official tiebreaker rules as stated on the scorecard will prevail. Head-to-Head
results will always be considered first.
GOLD CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET
This will be a draw of eight. The winners of each pool will advance into the Gold Bracket. If the
tournament has seven pools, one wildcard team will fill the eighth spot. Each school may have
one team representative in the Gold Bracket. Should two teams from the same school win their
respective pools, the school will decide which team will enter the Gold Bracket. (Team members
must remain with their original team.)
If the first place team in a pool does not go to the Gold Bracket, the second place team will
advance.
If the second place team is ineligible because their school is already represented in the draw, that
spot will be drawn from the remaining eligible 2nd place teams from all pools.
PLACEMENT OF TEAMS IN THE GOLD DRAW
The placement of teams in the gold draw will be determined before the tournament begins. The
Tournament Committee will determine the tournament’s top four “seeds” based on a number of
factors (including but not limited to: performance at the 2016 Sectional Championship, 2016
National Championship and Spring Invitational, and current roster). These teams will be placed
into Pools A, B, C, and D. Those pools will be placed on lines 1, 8, 4, and 6 in the Gold Draw
respectively. If the top seeds do not win their pool, the pool winners will take their spot in the Gold
Draw. The rest of the pool winners will be randomly placed into the remaining lines of the draw.
EXCEPTION: If a team would be facing a wildcard team from their same pool, the Tournament
Committee will adjust the order of the draw. The Tournament Committee wants to prevent teams

from playing a team they have already played in the first round of the bracket play. The
Committee’s decision on the placement of the teams in this scenario is final.
3rd & 4th Place – Automatic Bid to Nationals
The semi-finalists will play off for 3rd and 4th place. Both positions will be offered bids to the
National Championship.
In the event that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and/or 4th place team has already received a bid to the National
Championship (via the Spring Invitational), bids will be offered to teams in the order of finish in
the Gold Draw. Travel assistance stipends will be given to the top three finishing teams.
CONSOLATION DRAW – GOLD BRACKET
First-round losers will be placed in the Consolation draw of the Gold Bracket and are expected to
play the remaining matches to completion.
SILVER BRACKET
The placement of teams will be similar to the placement procedure in the Gold Bracket, but
without pre-determined seeds. The Silver Bracket will consist of 8 to 12 teams. The Tournament
Committee will determine the size of the Silver Bracket after play concludes Saturday. All teams
with a 2-1 record will be entered into the pool automatically, with their order drawn at random.
Once all the 2-1 teams are positioned, all teams with a record of 1-2 will be entered into the draw
randomly.
The Silver Bracket will have a consolation round for first-round losers.
The Silver Bracket Champion will receive a paid entry fee into the Spring Invitational. Should the
team not enter the Spring Invitational, the team will receive the amount of the entry fee to use for
their club.
BRONZE BRACKET
The remaining teams will be placed into this bracket at random.
The Bronze Bracket Champion will receive a case of balls and $50 Gift Certificate.
The Bronze Bracket will have a consolation round for first-round losers.
NOTE: The Tournament Director retains the right to adjust the
schedule and/or format due to inclement weather or unforeseen
conditions.
