FOR PhD EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC HEALTH
GUIDELINES
The Award
This award recognizes the postgraduate researcher who has completed an outstanding PhD
body of work in the field of public health, or in a closely related field, and made a valuable
contribution to public health theory, knowledge, policy and practice.
Eligibility
Higher Degree by Research students at CAPHIA member universities who have had their
PhD examination process completed within the 12 months prior to award submission
closing date. The PhD must have a public health focus.
Nominator
CAPHIA is seeking one nomination of an outstanding applicant from each Head of School at
a CAPHIA member university, with advice from the principal PhD Supervisor.
Application
Applicants are required to submit a written submission, by 5pm, Eastern Standard Time,
Monday, 12 June 2017, which includes:
1. Cover Sheet (completed and signed)
2. Thesis Abstract or Abridged Summary. (If the original thesis abstract exceeds 2
pages, an abridged version of up to 2 pages should be submitted in its place).
3. Supporting Statement: The core element of an application is the written
statement, maximum two pages) in which the nominee describes their activities
and achievements, and specifically addresses the selection criteria. This
statement should focus on the nominee’s PhD thesis and contributions to public
health, highlighting its distinctive and innovative aspects. Nominees should
provide evidence in support of their claims wherever possible. Criteria that will
be used by the selection panel will include:
 Significance of the research
 Challenges and how addressed
 Collaboration
 Research outcomes
 Publications and conference presentations arising from the PhD research
 Any translation into policy and practice
 Any third party recognition or commendation

The Supporting Statement must not exceed two A4 pages (font must be Times New Roman
11 point or Arial 11 point) and should include all bibliographic information that is referred to
in the submission. Applications exceeding the two page limit will not be considered.
1. Brief curriculum vitae: This should outline the nominee’s educational
qualifications, career history and relevant roles and responsibilities, and research
output (two pages maximum).
2. Nominator’s supporting statement: The nomination by the Head of School should
be provided with the advice of the principal PhD Supervisor. The statement in
support of the applicant’s PhD thesis and research, should address the quality of
the PhD work and final thesis, the research outcomes, any challenges in this field
of research and how addressed, and the contribution to public health. The Head
of School should substantiate claims made in the written submission, and may
draw on examiners reports as appropriate (one page maximum).
Optional additional supporting materials
Selection is based primarily on the written statement addressing the selection criteria and
the Nominator’s supporting statement. However, nominees may include selected materials
supporting their claims against the selection criteria. The relevance of any such material
must be made clear in the written statement.
Supporting materials* might include:
 A key publication
 Other awards or other recognition for the thesis or research contribution
*Nominees are encouraged, where possible, to provide digital material via a single URL.
Only one copy of the optional supporting materials should be sent with the application.
Selection Process
The Selection panel will include Members of the CAPHIA Executive Committee, and may
include other CAPHIA Heads of School and senior representatives of external organisations
such as the Public Health Association of Australia.
Applications will be assessed on individual merit as deserving of an award against the
selection criteria. The Selection Panel’s decision will be final and no further consideration
will be entered into. More than one award may be presented within a given year if there is
more than one outstanding candidate.
Presentation and Award
The Award will be announced by The President, Council of Academic Public Health
Institutions Australia (CAPHIA) at the next CAPHIA Public Health Teaching and Learning
Forum. Award winners will be invited to present on their thesis at the award ceremony.
The award will be a distinctive inscribed CAPHIA Trophy. In addition, the successful
candidate will have costs covered by CAPHIA for registration, domestic travel and
accommodation to attend the next CAPHIA Forum.
