First Lego League Robotics Club What is First Lego League? The best way to summarize FIRST LEGO League is to say that it is a robotics program for 9 to 16 year olds (9 to 14 in US/CAN/MEX), which is designed to get children excited about science and technology -- and teach them valuable employment and life skills. Teams are composed of up to ten children with at least one adult coach. This year we will have at least two adults per team. We will be offering this program to the 4th and 5th grade students. In early fall, FLL releases a Challenge which is based on a real-world scientific topic. This year’s Challenge Trash Trek is well under way. Teams are working diligently to come up with an innovative solution for dealing with our trash problem. They’re also trying to figure out how to spin a tire on the sorting mission. Each Challenge has three parts: the Robot Game, the Project, and the FLL Core Values. Teams of up to ten children, with one adult coach, participate in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project), all guided by the FLL Core Values. Teams may then choose to attend an official tournament, hosted by one of our Operational Partners. Past Challenges have been based on topics such as nanotechnology, climate, quality of life for the special needs population, and transportation. By designing our Challenges around such topics, participants are exposed to potential career paths within a chosen Challenge topic, in addition to solidifying the STEM principles that naturally come from participating in a robotics program. Team members also learn valuable life and employment skills, which will benefit them no matter which career path they choose. How long does the program run? The teams will meet once weekly after school (EVERY WEDNESDAY) from 2:15- 3:15 until participating in the Regional Competition in December. The teams may meet more frequently as the competition nears. The state competition meets on one Saturday in March so the program has the potential to run through March. (Date of tournament to be determined) What is needed from my child? The most important thing we need from your child is commitment. The team cannot function with members not coming to the meetings. Each child is very important to the team and plays a very important role. We also expect respect, not only to each other but to the coaches and volunteers as well as the school. There will be a $55 registration fee per child to cover our team registration and t-shirts. PTA has traditionally provided financial support to this enrichment program. That amount is undetermined at this time due to the fall fundraiser not being completed until September. What does the school provide? The school provides all of the equipment. Can I help? Most definitely!! Though we are hoping to have a faculty advisor, this is a volunteer driven program. We are in need of coaches/mentors and volunteers. You do not have to have any knowledge of this program or robotics as FLL provides guides each year. This program can only continue to succeed with parent/guardian support. How do I join? In order to be considered for LEGO robotics this year, the application fee and the $55 registration fee must be turned in together. Please place the fee in a sealed envelope with the child’s name, grade, and teacher on the outside. If there are more applicants than spaces or volunteers the registration fee will be returned to you. ($55) Other family, school, community, religious activities, etc. you are involved in that might affect your participation in the Robotics program: In order to accommodate your needs, please list any health, learning, cultural, religious or personal concerns that may affect your participation in the Robotics program: Answer these questions completely and thoughtfully: 1. What are two reasons you would like to participate in the Robotics program? How might it help you? 2. Describe a project or a major task you have completed this past school year (either on your own or with a team). What were some of the problems you faced? How did you solve those problems? What did you learn about yourself by doing this project or completing this task? 3. Describe a group you have worked with this past school year? What was one problem in working with this group? What would or did you do to solve this problem? For you, what is the hardest thing about working with a group of students? Pledge of Commitment I promise that if chosen for the 2015 Robotics program I will attend all sessions, work hard with my group, cooperate, and be respectful with all participants and adults in the program and be a worthy ambassador for the CCE Robotics program at all public events. My signature pledges my commitment to these goals. Student signature________________________________________________________ Date:___________________________________ Parent/Guardian Commitment / Consent We need two parent volunteers for every 10 students we accept into the program. Volunteers will assist students by keeping them on task, helping them organize their work and stay on schedule. If you cannot volunteer on a regular basis you need to be prepared to ensure that your child finishes their part of the research assignment, attends all the planned meetings and possibly host a weekend practice, or organize a trip to the library or on a related Field Trip. I understand that this program involves a huge commitment for students and parental support is essential to their success. ______________________________ has my full support and consent to participate in the 2015 Robotics program. The program cannot happen without adult volunteer participation. FLL Coach An FLL Coach provides support to his or her team and guides them in completing the season’s Challenge. The Coach asks questions, encourages the team to explore options, promotes teamwork and participation by all members, exemplifies Gracious Professionalism™, reinforces FLL’s Core Values and commits to having fun. **Please visit the website for additional information.
