Many played in last year’s Gordon Tallis cup and are looking forward to gaining valuable experience again this year. Our club encourages good sportsmanship and even though we play to win we also focus strongly on having fun. Eager to continue their excellent efforts so far this season alongside their coach and trainers, this Redbacks team is proud to represent their club against North Queensland’s best. The U-11s Redbacks would like to thank our valuable sponsors WC Plumbing and Lentons as well parents and friends who made this all possible. THE Rockhampton under 11s Brothers White and Blue teams have not only honed their football skills ready for Laurie Spina they have also learnt the Brothers song to help bond the two team’s together. The boys will sing the song after each of their games to keep them fired up and hopefully learn the Brothers spirit of working together and backing each other up, at the same time – having fun. Brothers Rockhampton have continued their support of the Laurie Spina carnival and is the largest junior rugby league club in Central Queensland with 28 teams from U-7 to U-18. Two past Rockhampton club members – Sam Hoare and Mitchell Zornig – who are contracted under 20s Cowboy players, will present the under 11s with their Laurie Spina jerseys on Thursday night before the carnival starts. The Brothers traditional butcher’s apron print jerseys were generously donated by Joanne Fletcher, Body Shop at Home. Our thanks go to other team sponsors, PG & NM Langdon Plumbing, Stevens Mobile Welding, Mining Equipment Maintenance, iWeld and MJ Hawkins Transport. The hardest thing now will be to keep the boys from getting too excited on the long trip up to Townsville. Mountain Men on way Cockatoos keen to do well LOCATED under the mountains is the home of the Springsure Mountain Men. We’re a small club made up of players from Springsure, Rolleston and outlying properties. Half of our under 11 side travel over 100kms for training and can clock up 500km a weekend for club games. The Laurie Spina carnival is the highlight of the year for these bush kids who many would never get to see an NRL game. The boys are traveling quite well at the moment, in a very strong Central Highlands competition and look forward to playing teams from North Queensland. ■ ABOVE: Springsure Junior Mountain Men – Back row, trainer Gordon Spannagle (left) coach Ken Copping (right) ; SOUTHERN Suburbs Rugby League Club this year celebrates its 40th birthday and boasts a proud tradition based in the southern outskirts of Cairns. Formerly known as the Panthers they changed names to the mighty Cockatoos and have provided a great player base for the seniors. One of our newest Origin heroes, Nate Myles, plied his trade here at Southern Suburbs guiding the mighty cockatoos to the U16 premiership in his last year at the club before moving on to the big time.
