Introduction
The frequency allocations in some European countries do not allow a separation between
the highest GSM-R channel and the lowest channel in the public mobile band where UMTS
and/or LTE might be used. Doubts were raised that the improved receiver used in the main
measurements may not be able to handle the most critical situation where UMTS/LTE is
used in the first 5 MHz of the public mobile band. The Swedish Railways have chosen to use
steep external band pass filters to be fitted in front of standard GSM-R receivers in order to
solve even this frequency constellation.
It was therefore decided to conduct additional measurements to investigate the interference
behaviour of different receiver/filter configurations when faced with one broadband interfering signal in the frequency range between 925 and 930 MHz. Special interest lies in the transition points between sideband emissions and receiver overloading as the dominant interference effect.
The measurements took place at the laboratory of the Federal Network Agency in Munich,
Germany on 31st October 2013 and were attended by the following persons:

Receiver configurations
The following receiver configurations were used for these additional measurements

Rx1: “Improved receiver” containing a highly linear front-end, improved filter and
AGC as used in the main measurements

Rx2: “Standard receiver” without any filter as used in the main measurements

Rx3: “Standard receiver” with external dual 8-cavity filter Kaelus DDF9001F1V1

Rx4: “Improved receiver” with external small filter Lorch 9CFX-899/R52
Rx3 is the configuration used by the Swedish Railways. Rx4 is a possible simpler solution
with a small external filter in combination with the built-in filter of the improved receiver.

Wanted GSM-R signal
The wanted GSM-R signal was identical to the one used in the main measurements. To simulate the most critical frequency situation, the highest practically used GSM-R channel 973
with a downlink frequency of 924.8 MHz was used.
To assess the influence of the wanted signal frequency on the result, some measurements
were also done with GSM-R channel 970 on 924.2 MHz.
The wanted signal levels were adjusted in 10 steps between -101 dBm and -31 dBm.

Interfering signals
The following interfering signals were used:


UMTS
To determine the transition point from sideband emissions to receiver overloading, it was
necessary to use both “standard” and “realistic” signals of all systems as their level of sideband emissions is considerably different. Spectra and characteristics of the interfering signals are described in Section 3 of the main measurement report.
The centre frequency (carrier) of the interfering broadband signals was 927.6 MHz which is
the lowest usable channel for these systems in the 900 MHz public mobile band. To assess
the effect of the filter solutions for higher frequency offsets, additional measurements were
also performed with a UMTS/LTE frequency of 932.6 MHz.

Filter response measurements
Using a spectrum analyzer with a built-in tracking generator, the frequency response of the
two external filters was measured. The following figures show the results.

As expected, the attenuation of the dual 8-cavity Kaelus filter in the critical frequency range
925 to 930 MHz is considerably better than that of the Lorch filter.

Failure criterion
As in the previous measurements the failure criterion was a reduction of the reported RxQual
value of 4. This was measured with the CMU200 base station emulator.

Note: Because the measurements aim to simulate realistic situations and should be able to
assess the transition point from where overloading effects take dominance, the unwanted
emissions from the interfering signal inside the GSM-R channel were deliberately not suppressed by additional filtering. This setup also allowed determining how much improvement
of the situation for each receiver is due to the fact that the sideband emissions of realistic
signals are much lower than the standards require.
The directional coupler allowed interfering signal levels of around -10 dBm to be applied to
the GSM-R receiver input.

The circulator separated uplink and downlink and ensured that only the downlink is affected
by the interferer.
First, the GSM-R signal link was established with the desired wanted level. Then, the interfering level was raised until the failure criterion was reached. At this point, wanted and interfering signal levels were recorded. The difference between both levels is the C/I.
All signal levels given in this Annex are the RMS levels applied to the input of the whole receiver configuration, measured over the whole signal bandwidth. For Rx configurations employing external filters (Rx3 and Rx4), this is the signal level at the input of the filter.

Note: At high total signal levels the improved receiver seems to apply some sort of switching
in the receiver front end which results in an improvement of the C/I for higher signal levels.
The C/I values given were obtained by reducing the interference from higher to lower levels.
The difference in C/I for the improved receiver with and without Filter (Rx1 and Rx4) is mainly due to the passband attenuation of the filter which lowers the actual receiver input level by
2-3 dB. Consequently the level from which overloading starts raises accordingly.

The C/I measured with one GSM interferer are not directly comparable to the C/I for a
broadband interferer because one GSM interferer does not create intermodulation effects in
the receiver. The only interference mechanisms are blocking and sideband emissions.

Result evaluation
The measurements have shown the following:
In all tested frequency combinations with broadband interferer the receiver is never overloaded when fitted with the Kaelus filter. Only the situation where a GSM interferer is just 2
channels above the wanted GSM-R channel, this filter cannot improve the situation.
The improved receiver is already between 10 and 20 dB more immune against overloading
from broadband signals in the first 5 MHz of the public mobile band than the standard receiver. It is, however, about 5 to 8 dB less immune against one GSM interferer on 925.2
MHz than the standard receiver.
When the broadband interferer is on 932.6 MHz (carrier) which is another 5 MHz away from
the band edge, the improved receiver is also never overloaded. However with a UMTS interferer kept at 927.6 MHz the immunity of the improved receiver increases by 5dB when the
wanted GSM-R Signal is changed from GSM-R channel 973 (924.8 MHz) to GSM-R channel
970 (924.2 MHz).
The interference potential of LTE to any filtered receiver configuration is slightly higher than
that of UMTS because the rectangular LTE spectrum has the full spectral density up to the
channel edges.
The combination of the Lorch filter and the improved receiver does not show significant improvements in any situation.
The transition point where the dominant interference effect changes from sideband emissions to overloading strongly depends on the spectrum mask of the interferer. The following
table shows the wanted signal levels above which receiver overloading is dominant.

Conclusion of the additional measurements
As expected, the dual 8-cavity Kaelus filter in front of the standard receiver can prevent receiver overloading effects due to broadband interferers in all frequency combinations, even
when the interferer is in the first 5 MHz of the public mobile band.
The improved receiver already increases immunity against receiver overloading in this situation by about 15 to 20 dB but is still up to 20 dB less immune than the standard receiver with
Kaelus filter. In case the interferer has an additional separation of 5 MHz (between 930 and
935 MHz), the improved receiver is also never overloaded.
The benefits from the dual 8-cavity Kaelus filter over the improved receiver only shows up
when facing realistic broadband interferers with far better sideband spectra than the standards require. If the sideband emissions are close to the requirements given in the standards,
their interference effect dominates up to much higher wanted GSM-R levels before receiver
overloading begins. This may partly destroy the positive effects gained by any GSM-R receiver improvement.
