A key ingredient in every successful team is team spirit i.e. the willingness of each member to work together with loyalty, enthusiasm and never say die attitude. Leicester City, in winning the
Premier League last night, epitomised that spirit throughout the season. In golfing terms their achievement was the equivalent in golfing terms to Tin Cup winning all 4 majors. Last September,
you could get better odds on Sir Alex Ferguson winning Strictly Come Dancing or David Beckham becoming Man City Manager, than you could on Leicester winning the Premiership
So if Leicester can do it why can’t we do something similar on the golf course and bag a handful of trophy’s and pennants this season. The Captains are putting in a huge amount of time and
effort to get our teams ready for their matches and we wish them well and I encourage more members to support their efforts.
If you are looking for an omen, Leicester City FC is made up of 15 letters as is Co Sligo Golf Club … Paddy Power here I come !!

The Metal Man Portuguese Golf Trip.
The Metal Man Golfing Group returned last week after
another successful trip to Portugal. This group of retired
gentleman are very highly organised and have a Tour
Manager, Director of Golf, and a Handicap Committee.
The handicap committee make handicap adjustments after
every day’s play. There are very high standards to be
maintained by the members of the group and for any
misdemeanour by a member they receive a yellow card.
There is a substantial monetary fine for each offence and a
surcharge if not paid on time. Eight cards were issued on
this trip. The offences were:
Playing of range golf balls. Not signing their card.
Abusing the handicap secretary.
A1. No. The mound of sand in the photo
has the same status as if it was lying flat
to the surface. It is a natural part of the
course and, importantly, is not a loose
impediment.
From the Definition of Loose
Impediments;
“Sand and loose soil are loose
impediments on the putting green, but
not elsewhere”.
A2. No. A player may not even press
down on the sand behind their ball while
addressing their ball, although they may
lightly ground their club on the sand.
A3. No. No penalty is incurred if some of
the sand is removed on the backswing of
a stroke that is completed, as clarified in
Decision 13-2/9
Of course, once the stroke has been
made the player should then flatten
the remaining mound of sand for the
benefit of those players who follow.
Repairing divot damage is
essential. Correct immediate repair of
divot holes with a sand/seed mix
promotes the fastest recovery
possible.
Martin Reilly BMW, in association with BMW Ireland, are
delighted to offer the members of County Sligo Golf Club the
chance to play in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Pro-Am in the KClub on Wednesday the 18th of May.
There are 3 places up for grabs and all you have to do is show us
your “Ultimate Drive” and prove that you are Ireland’s most
driven golfer. All entrants must have a handicap of 12 or less,
simply go to www.bmwproamexperience.ie and upload your
photo, video or story as to why you should be chosen. The more
creative and entertaining that you can be – the better your
chance of winning will be!!!
Closing date for entries is the 8th of May so get your thinking caps
on and get recording!! A Happy Gilmore tee shot mixed with an
interesting location with a splash of product placement is bound
to go down well with the judges!!
One member found a range ball on the fairway he was playing and threw it back
onto the driving range, only to find that another member was playing with it,
although he was playing a different hole at the time.
Losing the “yellow ball” on yellow ball day. Sneezing when a player was putting
causing him to miss the putt.
The failure to eat all of the “steak on the stone” should have been included and not
given to the dog.
On the last day of the trip they play for the coveted “Red Jacket”. This is the
highlight of the trip and every member is anxious to win it. Two past captains of the
club have won it with along with other high profile members, names not mentioned.
This year’s winner was the genial Eugene Henry who accepted the jacket in his
usual graceful manner. In his acceptance speech he said how honoured he was to
win this famous jacket and that he would wear it with distinction particularly at
special events in the club and elsewhere.
On advice he received during the trip, he said that he slowed down his swing and
decided that he would no longer run on the golf course, but walk briskly in future.
This seems to have improved his golf and his handicap should plummet during the
year. One to watch.
There was a very notable winner of the “camel” or the hump this time, no names
mentioned but the offence was serious and could have received a red card.
Tom Staunton easily retained the “wooden spoon” and it now proudly sits once
again on the mantelpiece in his home. He also celebrated his birthday on the trip
blew out all the candles on his cake and received some lovely presents for which he
was very grateful.
