Class
A
It is very important for your child to
be at school every day, but if your
child will be absent, please call 4955272 to let the office know.
A
Your child should arrive at school
between 8:15 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. When
your child arrives at school he/she
will need to go to the school gym and
wait to be dismissed to the classroom.
If your child plans to eat breakfast
he/she will need to eat breakfast and
then go to the school gym. Children
should not arrive prior to 8:15 a.m.
as there is no supervision before 8:15
a.m. If you need to drop your child
off earlier, please check into the
Champions before and after school care
program. Information regarding this
program is available in the school
office. School begins at 8:30 a.m.
We will have art once a week on
Thursday and every fourth Friday.
A successful school experience is the
responsibility of the child, the
parent and the school. Regular
attendance without tardiness is the
key. Your child’s academic progress
is influenced to a great extent by
being in school and on time each day
school is in session.
B
Birthdays are a special time for
children. If your child will be
having a birthday during the school
year, you may bring a nutritious snack
for the class. Birthday celebrations
MUST follow the Wellness Policy
Guidelines. (See the “Wellness Policy”
on the last page)

with your child. Unless I receive a

We will have one exciting field trip
planned for this school year.
School is dismissed at 3:40 p.m. If
you will be picking up your child at
the end of the day at the picnic
tables, your child will be dismissed
from the classroom, once the
announcement has been made. If your
child will be picked up after school
in the Express Pick Up line, your
child will wait in the classroom until
he/she is called by the office. Once
your child is outside at the front of
the school an adult will assist your
child in getting into your vehicle.

Colorado weather is very unpredictable
and sometimes very severe. During
severe weather, parents are asked to
help by making a decision regarding
their own child. If, in a parent’s
judgment, it is too hazardous to send
your child to school, your child
should be kept home. The child will
not penalized for the absence or
tardiness. Check the district web
site www.d49.org for current
information about emergency closings
and delays.
Please make sure that your child’s
emergency information is updated in
We will have gym/P.E. on Monday and
Wednesday.
AH
Your child will have homework MondayThursday. It will need to be returned
each Friday to school. More
information will be given.

I
The question of when to keep your
child home from school is often a
difficult one, especially when
decisions must be made first thing in
the morning. It is important,
however, to keep your child home if
he/she is ill. This helps to make them
more comfortable and prevents others
from becoming ill. Children function
more effectively in the classroom when
they are healthy.
A
We will have indoor recess when the
temperature is 17 degrees or below
with the wind chill.
This year we will be using iPads in
our first grade classrooms. These will
be integrated into our first grade
curriculum and used in small group
instruction, one to one instruction,
centers and a variety of other
curricular activities.
J
When the weather gets cooler, please
make sure your child wears a jacket to
school.
K
Know what’s going on by reading the
weekly newsletter.
L
First grade will have recess and lunch
from 11:05 – 11:40. The children eat
lunch from 11:20 to 11:40. If your
child decides to buy lunch from the
cafeteria, the cost of lunch is $2.10.
M
This year we are using a math program
called Engage New York. This program
integrates the Common Core State
Standards, rigorous classroom
reasoning, extended classroom time
devoted to practice and reflection
through extensive problem sets, and
high expectations for mastery.
We will have music once a week on
Tuesday and every other Friday.
N
Please read the newsletters that will
come home each Monday to learn about
what’s going on in our classrooms.
O
Please make sure to sign in and out at
the office every time you come to
school. You will need to bring your
driver’s license.
Open lines of communication is
essential for a successful year.
Please let me know if you have ANY
concerns or questions regarding your
child throughout the year. I feel
that it is our job to work together as
partners to help your child have a
successful year in first grade.
P
There are three main parties each
year---Halloween, Christmas and
Valentine’s Day. Parents are welcome
to participate in the festivities! We
will have some other celebrations that
the first grade teachers will organize
such as the 50th Day of School, 101st
Day of School and our End of the Year
Celebration.
If you need to pick up your child
early from school, please go to the
school office and sign your child out
on the appropriate form. The
secretary will call the classroom to
let the teacher know that your child
is being picked up early.
Below are the Playground Rules &
Procedures:
Monkey bars: cross one person at a
time and do not stand or walk on top
Swings: stay seated while swinging,
one person per swing
Slides: only go down the slides
The rocks MUST remain on the ground.
No rough play.

READ Plans are for students identified
as having a significant reading
deficiency, a teacher and other
skilled school professionals will
create a READ plan in collaboration
with the student’s parent. The READ
plan will be reviewed at least
annually and updated or revised as
appropriate. Components of the READ
plan can include:

The student’s specific diagnosed
reading skill deficiencies.





The goals and benchmarks for the
student’s growth in attaining
competency
The scientifically based or
evidence-based reading
instructional programming the
teacher will use.
The manner in which the plan
will be monitored and evaluate
progress.
The strategies the student’s
parent is encouraged to use.
Additional services the teacher
deems available and appropriate.
The children will be going out for
recess everyday unless it is raining
or it is extremely cold. We will stay
indoors for recess if the temperature
is 17 degrees or below with the wind
chill. Please keep this in mind when
helping your child select clothing for
the day. If your child is well enough
to be at school, he/she is well enough
to participate in outdoor recess, if
properly dressed. In fact, the germs
that cause colds thrive more readily
in the heated indoor air and it is
beneficial to go outside and get some
fresh air.
Report cards are issued every nine
weeks. These reports reflect the
progress you child has made toward
various first grade objectives and
skills.
S
The SAFARI folder is what we use in
first grade for daily communication
with our children’s families. The
SAFARI folder contains a Weekly
Behavior Chart that is located on the
backside of the folder. Your child’s
behavior will be highlighted each day
on the behavior chart. Please be sure
to check and initial your child’s
SAFARI folder each evening. Please
use the SAFARI folder to send all
notes, money and other important
things that are being sent back to
school.
We will have time set aside for a
small snack after our afternoon recess
each day. Your child may bring a
snack to school to have during this
time.
Spelling words will be sent home every
Friday and a spelling test will be
given the following Friday.
T
If your child has a change in his/her
transportation home, please inform me.
Without a note or a phone call, your
child MUST go home the same way as
they normally do.
U
If you do not understand something I
have sent home, please feel free to
ask.

Falcon Elementary School has a policy
that all VISITORS (including familiar
faces) are required to check in at the
school office with a driver’s license
or military I.D. and receive a
visitor’s badge. Falcon Elementary
School welcomes and encourages family
involvement. It is important to
remember that while this may seem
inconvenient to frequent visitors, it
is the goal and responsibility of the
school to create a safe learning
environment.
