Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s Gospel graces us with a beautiful prayer that can make every
day of our lives a jubilee of mercy: “O God, be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13). Religious Israelites despised the tax collector who
prayed it, for collaborating with Gentile occupiers and handling currency that bore the “divine” emperor’s graven image. But the Pharisee’s
long-winded self-congratulation, mixed with self-righteous condemnation, was no “prayer” at all. “The Pharisee . . . spoke this prayer to
himself” (18:11, emphasis added). Praying the tax collector’s simple,
sincere, succinct cry for mercy acknowledges our own sinfulness, and
“welcomes” other sinners as brothers and sisters with whom we can
identify, even empathize, echoing Pope Francis’ famous comment
about not being the one to judge. Indeed, the tax collector “went home
justified” (18:14), that is, restored to God’s friendship, for God’s mercy
is not prize achieved but gift received. “Let your prayer be brief: for tax
collector, prodigal son, and dying thief were all reconciled to God by a
single phrase!” (Saint John Climacus, 7th century)
Sun. 9:00 AM
Let your light
SHINE
before others that
they may see your
good deeds and glorify
your Father in Heaven.

St. Maria Goretti
Pastoral Parish Council (PPC) Meeting Topics
October 18, 2016
Regarding our sponsorship of the Darwch family, Paulette Johnson, Catholic Social Services, has recently
received information that the Darwch family is expected to arrive within the next six weeks. They will be
accommodated in a duplex, Stony Plain, adjacent to their relatives, the Edris family, who arrived in May.
At this time, there is still a need for a living room sofa for the Darwch family.
Catholic Social Services now provides up to fifty percent of the annual budget for the sponsorship of Syrian
families. Therefore, the Circle of New Friends has submitted a letter of request for financial assistance for
the sponsorship of the Darwch family.
Ticket sales for the Circle of New Friends fundraiser, Saturday, October 22, have gone well.
PPC members and all SMG parishioners are invited to attend the refugee sponsorship orientation session
facilitated by Paulette Johnson, Catholic Social Services, on Tuesday, October 25, 6:30 p.m., St. Maria
Goretti Church.
Members of the PPC were encourgaed to attend the Together in Ministry (TIM) workshop, hosted by the
Edmonton Archdiocese, re-scheduled for Saturday, October 22.
The PPC reviewed the SMG Mission Statement. Suggestions for revisions to the Statement will be received
and discussed at future PPC meetings.
The PPC agreed on three major objectives for the upcoming year, that is, continuing to support the sponsorship of the Edris and Darwch families, nurturing the prayer life of the SMG community, especially families,
and growing the relationship between the children and their families of Holy Spirit School and St. Maria
Goretti Parish.
The next PPC meeting date is Tuesday, November 15, 2016, 7:00 p.m.

Sunday Hospitality / Fellowship
Myth: Hospitality should look like a feast that can feed the entire village.
Reality: Sunday hospitality is about gathering with your neighbors and
friends once a week after mass, and enjoying coffee and a snack like
muffins, cookies, fruits, etc.
Sunday hospitality should always be reasonable in size and in fare so it
doesn’t look overwhelming to anyone who may wish to host.
Won’t you consider hosting a Sunday with the help of another family or
by yourself? There is a signup sheet at the back of the Church.
DID YOU KNOW
Taking part in hosting is a great way to get some parish involvement without a high level of commitment!
We would love to have you!
And we greatly appreciate all the efforts that every host puts into Sunday
hospitality!

Ernest Jablonski or Frank Moar know if you have donated a perishable so it can be distributed in a timely manner.
