CICO (Check in- Check out) Guidebook “Staying on Track” Thank you for volunteering to help our CICO students. This is an informational and trouble shooting guide to get you started. Secondary Team Members Neal Thompson- Administrator Deb Cratty- Administrator Dave Wilt- 8th Grade Representative Cary Jacobson- 7th Grade Representative Mary Keith- 6th Grade Representative Teresa Sharp – ISSP & SWIS Data Kari Caldwell- Outreach Worker Donna Slaton- Problem Solving Team Goal Statement The goal of CICO is to provide behavioral and academic supports to students that need more than can be offered in the traditional classroom in order to ensure their success. Individual Student Goals The weekly goal for each student will be determined by the Secondary Team after baseline scores have been received. Generally students begin at 80%. The goal will be adjusted occasionally by the Secondary Team based on student data. When the student is able to maintain their behavior and academics at the agreed upon Secondary Team level, they will graduate from the program. Criteria for Acceptance into the Program Repeated Office Discipline Referrals (ODR’s) Level III referrals Chronic Minors resulting in weekly discipline Two or more D’s and/or F’s Faculty Referral Approved Parent Request Approved Student Request Initial Meeting Once a student has been accepted by the Secondary Team as a good candidate for CICO, a meeting will be scheduled with an administrator, CICO mentor, and the student. The program will be explained; and upon parent/guardian approval, procedures will be explained and data collection of baseline will begin. CICO- Start of Services The Secondary Team will match the student with a CICO adult after the initial meeting and parental/guardian consent has been obtained. The student will begin CICO as soon as possible. Check In Students will check in with their CICO adult in the morning before first class bell. At check in the student will be greeted, receive their point sheet, and the CICO adult will help the student prepare for the school day. Check Out Students will check out with their CICO adult right after the last bell. The CICO adult will assess the student’s day, go over the student’s points with them, and encourage the child to take home a copy of the daily points to share with their family. Please tear off the pink copy and send it home with the student. On Track Lottery As a positive reinforcement for our students that are working so hard on the Check In and Check Out system, we have a weekly lottery. If your CICO student checks out with you, please give them one of the “lottery” tickets. They can receive a maximum of five tickets per week. The student will need to write their first and last name on the ticket, and the tickets need to be deposited in the On Track Lottery Jar in the main office. It is acceptable to give the students their tickets and have them deposit them in the office jar on their own, and it is acceptable to collect the tickets with their names throughout the week and for the CICO adult to deposit the entire week’s tickets for all their students at once. (The reinforcement is about checking out with their adult, not about organization and the ability to get the ticket clear into the jar.) On Monday morning all CICO students will be sent to the library. A drawing for prizes will take place at this time. Point Sheet Language The comment section of the point sheets should be neutral or positive. Neutral statements are pointers that can help the child be more successful in that classroom the next time that they are there. Examples of neutral statements include but are not limited to: “please be seated when class starts,” “make sure what you say to peers is respectful,” “homework is important,” “raise hand and wait to be called on”, etc. The student must be given proper feedback in order to correct behavior. Positive statements are simple encouragements of behavior that you would like the student to repeat. Examples of positive statements include but are not limited to: “great job getting here on time,” “got to work quickly,” “hand up and ready to go,” “ignored negative peer- great job,” etc. Communication between the child and the teacher is vital to the importance of the program. Reflective feedback is necessary for student growth. Do not give the child a two if they deserve a one. Likewise a half point should not be given at any time. Only use 0, 1, or 2. The entire integrity of the program depends on reliable feedback to the CICO adult and the Secondary Team. Reinforcement CICO adults may reinforce students, but they should be cautious. Please remember that the goal is to eventually graduate the child from the program. Heavy reliance on reinforcement will impede our goal. Point Sheet Pointers Lost and Forgotten Point Sheets- Point sheets should be available in all classrooms. In the event that a point sheet is not available, the student may ask the teacher to write their score on a piece of paper or in their agenda where it can be transferred by the CICO adult at check out. Students are not to leave class to go retrieve a forgotten point sheet. The point sheet can be retrieved at a proper passing time when classes will not be disrupted. Students are not to be penalized for forgetting their point sheets- instead they are to be encouraged to make a positive choice and be responsible for getting their points documented on paper or in their agenda for their CICO adult to transfer at check out. Missing Scores- The CICO adult should e-mail the proper teacher if a score is missing. The missing score can then be written on the point sheet by the CICO adult. The score should be a reflection of the student’s behavior in that class period. Point Sheet Destruction- Students will on occasion tear up and/or throw away a point sheet in frustration. The job of the classroom teacher and CICO adult is to encourage the child to make a better choice. All point sheets will be accepted no mater how badly they are crumpled, torn up, or taped back together. The CICO adult can e-mail teachers for missing scores so team can be provided a true assessment of the student’s day. Point Sheet Refusal- Point sheet refusals should be referred to Secondary Team. It should be noted that point sheet problems usually work themselves out as student’s progress through CICO. Problems that are chronic will be addressed by Secondary Team. Removal from Class If the student is removed from class to the office, their point sheet should be a zero for that class period. Student’s can only earn positive points in the classroom setting. This will need to be taught to CICO students, so they understand that they must be in class the entire class period to receive points. I.S.S. CICO adults are encouraged to check in and check out with their students even when they have I.S.S. The student should be given a point sheet so that the CICO adult can give the child feedback on their day in I.S.S. The CICO adult should go over the student’s point score for I.S.S. Hallways Please note hallway problems on the bottom of the point sheet. The CICO point sheet covers classroom behavior only. Repetitive hallway issues will need to be addressed by Secondary Team in another way, so it is extremely important to document when and where hallway problems are occurring. Other Problems If you are having a problem that has not been addressed in this packet, please talk to or email the problem to any member of the secondary team so that they can bring it to the team’s attention. CICO problem solving is done at the Secondary Team meetings and decisions are made as a team. Once a decision has been reached, the team will notify all parties affected by the decision. CICO is a school wide support system. No decisions will be made about the operation of CICO outside of Secondary Team. Individual Student Goals If Responding: Goal Setting 80% Raise Goal 5-10 % Self-Monitor – student assigns own points Check in w/ each teacher each period – teacher OKs Duration 4 weeks 2 weeks 2 weeks Self-Monitor - student assigns own points Check in w/ each teacher each period – teacher OKs 2 weeks Self-Monitor – student assigns points, but doesn’t check with individual teachers only CICO adult 2 weeks (if needed) Reinforcer Daily Daily MWF (fade reinforcer) Mon – reinforcer if meet goal Wed – reinforcer if meet goal both Tues and Wed Fri – reinforcer if meet goal both Thurs and Fri WF Wed - reinforcer if meet goal Mon.,Tues. and Wed. The team also meets every other Thursday in the afternoon for progress/monitoring and program evaluation. Please remember when referring a student to fill out the referral form completely and received by Friday so it can be on the agenda for Tuesday morning. If Encore/Bravo is referring a student make sure the core team is involved in filling out the sheet or vice versa. All information is essential for the success of the program and remember all information is confidential. Mentoring If a student is not successful with CICO, they will be moved to Mentoring. With this intervention the student is involved in picking the adult. The services are the same but more intense and one on one. This means it will be more time consuming and take some work on both ends. It is more individualized. The student may want to check in with the adult several times a day when the program begins. The Mentoring adult may have to track down the student many times a day to get the student hooked on the program. Remember…..you are prompting the student for ‘what to do’ in relevant situations. We are doing whatever it takes to help the student be successful and move back to CICO. CICO with Individualized Features Students who are not successful in CICO or mentoring will use CICO that contains a specific goal. These students will have their own point sheet unique to them. A specific goal will be added to the students point sheet. This goal will be the main focus for how they are scored in the four school-wide expectations. These point sheets will be turned in and follow the same procedures as CICO. Graduation from the Program Once the student has been successful with the program he or she will be graduated. A conference with the student will be held. Administration will share successes with the student and a certificate will be awarded. The CICO teacher will be notified of graduation. Attendance CICO Goal Statement The goal of attendance CICO is to provide support to students who struggle to maintain adequate attendance. Criteria for acceptance into the program Students who accumulate 3 unexcused absences or 7 total absences in the first semester of school may be referred to the secondary team for support. All cases will be reviewed to determine whether CICO is appropriate for the student. Students who have excessive absences later on in the year will also be reviewed for the program. CICO- Start of Services The Secondary Team will match the student with a CICO adult after the initial meeting and parental/guardian consent has been obtained. The student will begin CICO as soon as possible. Check In Students will check in with their CICO adult in the morning before first class bell. At check in the student will be greeted and the CICO adult will help the student prepare for the school day. The CICO adult will keep a WEEKLY CI/CO sheet on which they record the student’s attendance for the week. Check Out Students will check out with their CICO adult right after the last bell. The CICO adult will assess the student’s day and offer encouragement/support. The weekly sheet should be turned in by the CICO adult every Friday in the main office On Track Lottery Attendance CICO students will also receive a lottery ticket each day that they are at school and on time. Please see above for more information on Lottery ticket procedures. Individual Student Goals If Responding: Goal Setting CICO Daily 0-2 absence CICO Daily 0-1 absences Check In Only 0-1 absences Duration 4 weeks Reinforcer Daily 2 weeks Daily 2 weeks Fri – reinforcer if goal is met for the entire week Graduation from the Program Once the student has been successful with the program he or she will be graduated. A conference with the student will be held. Administration will share successes with the student and a certificate will be awarded. The CICO teacher will be notified of graduation. Tertiary
