What is the Squash Matrix?

What is the Squash Matrix?
The Squash Matrix is an on-line competition management and ranking system developed to improve the method
of ranking players. Unlike player average systems which are based on the result of a pennant game in a specific
division and position, this new ranking system is based on player versus player results. At the heart of this program
is a matrix of points that are added or subtracted to a players rating depending on the result of the games and the
relative ratings between the two players.
The Squash Matrix is completely web-based meaning the information is instantly accessible and results can be
updated concurrently from any location with web access. Each registered player has an individual web-page,
displaying information such as current ranking, upcoming matches and previous match results.
History
The Squash Matrix was developed in the ACT in the late 1990s to assist with the management of the ACT pennant
competition and over time was modified into an on-line package. Since then it has been adopted by a number of
other squash jurisdictions across Australia and has been endorsed by Squash Australia as the single national
ranking system for all players in Australia.
Benefits
There are many benefits from using the Squash Matrix system:







All matches such as pennant competitions, tournaments, Club Championships, in-house and social
competitions can be used for ranking purposes.
The entire season can be seen in one glance. You can see where you are playing, on what night and
against whom as well as the ladder for the Grade/Division
All your previous matches, as well as those of other players (including your opponents), can be viewed.
Mobility between States and Territories is easily accommodated, making placing new players in their
‘correct’ grades easier.
Results are not swayed by reserve players playing out of their divisions.
Results can be input immediately via the Internet, thus making the Rating almost ‘real-time’.
As players’ contact details can be made visible (although individuals have the option to hide these) to
other squash players, finding reserves is quick and easy.
Personalising your Squash Matrix experience
Each registered player has their own individual web-page (or Player Record) that puts a wide range of information
at their fingertips. This includes:
 Current registered club;
 Team;
 Current Matrix Rating, together with the highest and lowest number of points;
 Current Matrix Ranking, which is a guide to their relative position within their Group; and
 Any contact information they wish to make visible for ease of communication with other players.
Each Player Page also contains a number of other features:
‘The Game Plan’, which provides a single one-page summary of the night’s events, including the opposition, the
previous and upcoming matches of both teams, as well as the ladder of the respective Division or Grade. One page
to tell you everything you need to know!
A 'Rating Chart’ that shows all of your results in a single bar chart.
‘What If’, which allows you to see the impact on your Matrix Rating of your results on the court. Simply enter your
opponent’s initials and the system will show you instantly what will happen if you win or lose.
‘Pennant Draw’, where you can view all of your matches for the season in one easy glance.
Securing your Privacy
The Squash Matrix incorporates a simple system that is designed to give you control of the management and
visibility of your contact details.
This control is accessed through a feature called ‘My Matrix’, which is available on the top right hand side of each
individual Player page. The My Matrix logon allows you to:
-
Update your personal details and set the level of visibility of this information;
Submit a photo of yourself for inclusion on your web-page (any photos submitted are vetted to ensure they
comply with the Squash Matrix policy).
Reset the randomly generated password to one that is easier to remember;
Clear any cookies that you might have uploaded onto the computer. This feature is particularly useful if you
are using a public computer, such as an Internet café or public library (the Squash Matrix uses cookies to
store information about your logon, so you will need to ensure that your system or firewall is enabled to
accept them).
In order to access your ‘My Matrix’ account, a password is required. A password will be sent to you if you provide
a valid email address to the System Administrator. This will be in the form of an automatically generated email
that will contain a randomly generated password, which you can then change to something easier to remember.
By clicking here a randomly generated
password will be sent to the email
address provided
By clicking here an email will be
generated to the Group
Administrator and you can ask for an
email address to be registered
against your record.
With a My Matrix’ logon you will also be able to view the contact details of other players. Without it, all contact
details will not be visible to you. While it is appreciated that you may wish to limit the visibility of your personal
information, we recommend that, in the interests of making contact between registered players as easy as
possible, you allow visibility of some phone number or e-mail addresses.
And remember – these details are not visible to anyone unless they are a registered Squash Matrix player.
One of the required fields is a Date of Birth and mailing address. This information is not visible to other players
and is only visible to authorised system administrators, all of whom have signed an agreement acknowledging their
obligations under the Squash Matrix and Squash Vic Privacy Policies. Again, we recommend that you include this
information, especially the Date of Birth as a unique identifier and also if you are a junior player. The mailing
address will only be used in very limited circumstances and will not be made available to any third parties.
