One Step Equations
 GOAL: To get the variable by itself!
 To solve addition equations:
 Subtract the number that is being added to
the variable from BOTH sides. THEN
CHECK!!
 Remember: Whatever you do to one side,
you MUST do to the other side!
 X+4=10
4-4 10-4=6 x=6
To Solve a Subtraction Equation:


Add the number that is being subtracted
from BOTH sides to get the variable alone.

Jim the jaguar went to the grocery store and spent 5 dollars on
fruits. He bought vegetables too, and the total cost was 13 dollars.
How much money did he spend on vegetables? Write an equation
to solve.
Hint: Vegetables= V
• Mark the monkey ate his lunch in 17 minutes.
This is 4 minutes more than what it took Brett
the badger to eat his lunch. How long did it take
Brett to eat? Write an equation to solve.
Billy the baboon walked 157 feet in 1 minute. This is
58 feet less than what Sammy the sloth walked in one
minute. How many feet did Sammy walk in one
minute? Write an equation to solve.
Two Step Equations
• Divide your problem by the equal sign.
• Circle your variable.
• Get rid of the number next to your variable
by using addition or subtraction.
• Multiply or divide.
• ALWAYS think of a balance when solving
equations.
4x+10=26
10-10
26-10=16
4x=16 4/4
16/4=4 x=4

Word Problems
• A cat went shopping at PetSmart for some cat food.
Along the way, she bought a six dollar toy. She spent 48
dollars in all, so how much money did she spend on cat

• Fred the fish wanted to buy rocks for everyone in the
family. If he has 12 family members, spends 62 dollars in
all, and buys a fake fin for himself for two dollars, how
much money did he spend on each family member?

• At a football game, a team scored 45 points in all, with all
points scored by touchdowns, except for one field goal.
How many touchdowns were scored? Write an equation
to solve. Hint: touchdown=7 points
